I installed a fresh and brand new Windows 7. I then installed Battlefield 2142 which is a fairly old game from 4-5 years, and as Battlefield 2142 was installing it said it was installing and updating Directx.

But I am worried that it overwrote W7 directx files with it's down old directx files.

What can I do? How can I make sure I have the latest Windows 7 DirectX files installed?

    Cheers.:thumb:

Games do this but they'll just use the web installer that MS provides 9x outof 10. If you're worried just run the web updater yourself.

I had a similar worry back in the day until I did a bit of research. Essentially it's as what's been listed in this thread. All these games do is attempt to install DX if you don't already have it on your system (just to be safe). It doesn't overwrite.

If it helps, DX should be rationalized as just a bunch of main files that need to be referred to. DX 9 doesn't interfere with DX 11 since versions are essentially different files altogether. (not as complex as drivers from this perspective)

Windows 7 only comes with the base DX 11 files (not even the updated ones if I recall). You'll ultimately need the rest of the DX files to actually run those games since they'll have nothing to refer to beforehand (unless they forcibly install it, or you install it yourself).

Therefore it's nothing to worry about, especially if you already have the most up-to-date DX. (I believe the latest updates go up to D3D#_43?) If a new update arises, simply run the web/offline installer via the official MS site or another game install might do it for you. If you want to check the versions out you can browse for the DX files in system32 under the "D" section with very obvious naming conventions.
