Such a thing as MBAM 3 free doesn't exist. Is only registered or not registered.
If not registered, it will work for 14 days and that's all.
Maybe MBAM 2 had a free version, I don't remember because have never used a free version.
Now the paid version is no longer used, although there is a lifetime license.
Why? It has become completely unusable, seems like made only for a commercial venture, to get money. Not for protecting anyone. That's the difference, both are absolutely useless crap.

That's not true. Malwarebytes 3 is still free. There's a 14 day trial of the paid version. After that it reverts to the free version.

Yes, and the free version is just on-demand scanning, not real-time.

    Crap!

On installing MB it automatically starts a 14 day trial, but you can end that at will. After the trial MB reverts to a free on demand scanner, much like MBAM 2.x.

MB 3.x has better detection and scans faster than MBAM 2.x.

    MBAM has reached EOL.

I think you mean "MBAM 2.x has reached EOL" :doubt:

They are still providing signatures for 2.x (this might end some day - "ongoing protection updates are not guaranteed") but they are not "as advanced" as the signatures for 3.x and MBAM 2.x might miss something which MBAM 3.x is actually detecting.
And MBAM 3.x is actively developed and gets bug fixes.

Yes, MB 3.x doesn't have the "AM". ;)

To me the notable change is that MBAM v2 was sold as a companion AV while v3 is promoted as a standalone/full-fledge AV. Since the registered premium version has MBAE built-in, it can't play nice anymore with suites that also have anti-exploit capabilities.

They really are very different programs. In fact, there is NO SUCH THING as MBAM 3. It is now just Malwarebytes.

MBAM = Malwarebytes Antimalware is an antimalware program only. The free version does not include a real-time scanner component. The Pro version does.

Malwarebytes (MB3) includes antimalware, anti-ransomware, anti-exploit, and malicious website protection. Like MBAM, the free version does not contain a real-time scanner.
