What is the major differences between NOD32 and Avira Free?

Why would one pay for NOD over the free Avira?

I ask because I am using NOD and love it, I installed Avira on my laptop and a couple of other machines and it seems very good as well, so I want to know what other people who have used both think the differences are and if it is worth $60 for 2 years instead of free.

    Thanks so much

Nod scans email, rootkit detection, http scanner, just to get the ball rolling.

I would use Nod over Antivir free to get away form the pop up adverts of Antivir and slow update servers. But then I decided to upgrade to Antivir premium and all those issues have gone- but then of course its not free.

    Cheers

Avira - better detection and heuristic, it ussually causes many false alerts.
NOD32 - easy to use, sufficient detection, smooth updates, instal and forget.
By the way Avira already works on Avira RootKit Detection, I use it and like it.

    nod32 has less bugs.
antivir has a few bugs to sort out atm.
there was a thread about antivir not doing to well at cleaning malware off an infected system.
mod32 is better in that reguard but still needs work in removing malware.

Thanks for the replies... If I said I surf some 'Questionable' websites, does they make one better than the other?

NOD32 only has "sufficient" detection? If Avira has "better" on-demand detection and NOD32 is within 1-2% I don't think we should split hairs over the "better" detection rates. ;) AV-Comparitives had both Avira and NOD32 at around 50% on the retrospective scanning which would put them equal in their tests.

    Disable Antivir free nag screen

I remember times, when I uploaded new virus to online scan and only NOD32 detected it.
But these days ussually only 3 AV finds it thanks to heuristic and NOD32 is not one of them.

Anyway NOD32 is great product, especially for gamers, but its default settings suck. I wrote it a few times on a forum with their man, since it is slovak product, but they did not change it.

By default, virus (signature) should be set to be quarantined or deleted, not alert a user.
IMON should deny downloading a virus, because when it downloads it, it can not delete it.

As for Avira, I think, that by default it still uses really disgusting sound (beep) to alert a virus.

SO it looks like both a great products, but nothing really says 'spend the $' because they are so close. I guess when my NOD runs out at the end of the month, I will switch and see how it goes. Why waste the $$$ that I really dont want to spend (as long as I am not opening the computer to danger)

    Thanks

If so that's OK, but it seems to be merely over 4 % better detection that Avira has.

    Best regards,

My vote goes to symantec beacause it is free(advantage over nod),has better self protection and less prone to false positives(advantage over avira).

well i prefer nod32 but if you can get the symantec corprate version for free i say take it!
i know that symantect corprate is alot lighter than norton home user products and has more customization
    and self protection

spot on, couldnt have said it better myself. :thumb:

lucky if you get a free.

there are cheaper than nod, wink wink..... but even so, i dont think nod will be giving current users the suite etc, there will be another nice fee on-top if that, which wont be healthy, especially if you look at how much Avira charged current licence holders just for the firewall in their suite upgrade.

I have none nor tried any of those. BUT, based on reviews and opinions over here on features, etc:
Money is not a problem- Nod32
    Free- Avira
    Some other scenario- not Symantec:D

id go with NOD32 if u have the money. reason: its light, has fast scans, great detection and low FP, IMON and much more.

if u dont want to spend money then get Symantec AV. it also has great detection rates and low FP. its settings are quite customizable too.

Symantec Corporate is light, decent scan speeds, 99% detection rate and zero false positives, i see no need to buy nod32, if you get that for free.

unless you want the better heuristics, i see no reason at all to pay for nod in your situation.
