Does anyone know what the Cygwin service is and exactly how important it is for a computer that has Windows 8.1? My computer's 'Action Center' keeps notifying me that Cygwin has stopped working properly. However, something that I read before(which I can't seem to find right now) said that Cygwin involved remote access, therefore, has anyone had experience with this program and is it all right to let this program establish(or re-establish) remote access to my computer?

You're not providing a lot of information here...

Cygwin is a third-party UNIX software environment for Windows:

    http://cygwin.com/

But it shouldn't install a system service, it shouldn't be there if you didn't install it, and it shouldn't (generally) allow or require any kind of remote access.

If you suspect an active infection, BTW, you might want to post a detailed account of what's happening on a board where they actually do malware cleaning; e.g. BleepingComputer.
