"Thousands of car dealers are struggling to do business this week because of two cyberattacks on an industry software provider. The cyberattacks on CDK Global, which provides software to nearly 15,000 car dealerships in the United States and Canada, led to a shutdown of sales, financing and payroll systems for many dealers... Cybersecurity professionals say it could take weeks for CDK to fully restore all systems... This cyberattack has a “ripple effect” across the country because the company has so many individual clients... Customers may be able to buy a car on paper, but they may not be able to complete some parts of the process, such as registration with state motor-vehicle agencies and setting up financing with banks and credit providers. There’s no easy way for dealers to conduct those operations until CDK resolves its problems because the company has so many individual clients." https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/06/21/car-dealers-cyberattack-cdk-global/ https://apnews.com/article/cdk-outage-cyber-attack-car-dealerships-9d3bbb01ee05ced0615ddefbaf49ab1e
I used to work for one of their competitors. A car dealership system going down is no small deal to them. It affects everything they do and will cost them a lot of money in lost sales.
Yes. The news reports I have seen are that the ask is for "10s of millions of dollars" and that the company is going to pay. All of these reports, however, are based on "a person with knowlege of the situation."
Companies keep on paying. If they had a decent IT Dept this could have been prevented. I blame the companies.
Correct, they are going to pay, see link. https://x.com/LastCallCNBC/status/1804298919519621565 At this point I'm starting to believe that security software simply isn't good enough, see also this thread: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/thr...nse-thats-easy-to-bypass.447186/#post-3199883
