Container shipping group CMA CGM said on Monday it was dealing with a cyber attack impacting its peripheral servers.
The attack did not concern the systems of its subsidiary CEVA Logistics, it added in a statement.

The French-based firm had said in a Twitter post earlier that external access to its IT applications was unavailable, without giving further details.

Update: CMA CGM confirms cyber attack

“As soon as the security breach was detected, external access to applications was interrupted to prevent the malware from spreading. Our teams are fully mobilized and access to our information systems is gradually resuming,” the company said in an emailed statement.

“The CMA CGM network remains available to the Group’s customers for all booking and operation requests. An investigation is underway, conducted by our internal experts and by independent experts.”

Some media outlets reported that the company has been hit by a ransomware attack by the Ragnar Locker group.
CMA CGM is the fourth container shipping company to experience a cyber attack including MSC, Cosco Shipping, and Maersk.

Container shipping group CMA CGM said on Tuesday that a cyber attack that affected its servers did not compromise any of its communications.

“All communications to and from the CMA CGM Group are secure, including emails, transmitted files and electronic data interfaces (EDI),” it said in a statement, adding that its maritime and port operations were functioning normally.
It was continuing to offer alternative access for customers after making its e-business website unavailable on Monday in order to prevent the spread of malware, the group said.

Two key players in the global shipping industry are trying to restore computer networks and assess the damage from separate cyber attacks this week that are adding short-term complications to supply chains already straining ahead of peak season for consumer demand.

The International Maritime Organization, a UN agency that serves as the industry’s regulator, said Thursday it suffered “a sophisticated cyber attack against the organization’s IT systems.” The breach affected its public website and internal systems, it said. That attack followed the disclosure earlier this week by closely held CMA CGM SA, the world’s fourth-biggest container liner, that its information systems were compromised.
CMA CGM is among the world’s five leading container liners that account for 65% of global capacity, according to Alphaliner data.
A ‘Headache’
There’s no evidence yet that the incidents are linked, but both disruptions are extensive and that possibility is being considered, according to a report by maritime intelligence service Lloyd’s List.

A rash of cyber incidents has afflicted the shipping industry in recent years, the biggest of which was an intrusion that cost Copenhagen-based A.P. Moller-Maersk A/S about $300 million in 2017.

The United Nations International Maritime Organization (UN IMO) disclosed a security breach over the weekend that the agency categorized as a "sophisticated cyber-attack" against its IT systems.

The incident was discovered on Thursday and impacted the IMO public website and other web-based services, the UN agency said in a press release.
An IMO spokesperson acknowledged a request for comment from ZDNet but did not return an email seeking for more details about the nature of the cyberattack.

Since yesterday (01/10/2020), service has been restored to the GISIS database; IMODOCS; and Virtual Publications. For security reasons, these systems were not available for a few hours early this morning but they are now back up and running.

CMA CGM, the world’s fourth-largest container shipping group, said it has restored its online business services after a cyber attack last month paralysed activity.

France-based CMA CGM first reported the incident on Sept 28, saying it had shut down access to its online services after malware targeted its peripheral servers.

“The CMA CGM Group’s e-commerce sites are once again live with all their main functionalities up and running,” the company said in a statement on Sunday. “Applications and essential functionalities are now operational and secured.”

CMA CGM has been hit by another cyber attack, just under one year since its last big breach.

The French containerline told customers today that it had suffered a leak of data on limited customer information involving first and last names, employer, position, email address and phone number. CMA CGM said its IT teams have immediately developed and installed security patches.
Late last September, CMA CGM was hit by ransomware which paralysed much of its IT infrastructure.

1,000 ships impacted by a ransomware attack on maritime software supplier DNV

About 1,000 vessels have been impacted by a ransomware attack against DNV, one of the major maritime software suppliers.

DNV GL provides solutions and services throughout the life cycle of any vessel, from design and engineering to risk assessment and ship management. The Norwegian company provides services for 13,175 vessels and mobile offshore units (MOUs) amounting to 265.4 million gross tonnes, which represents a global market share of 21%.

The ransomware attack took place on the evening of January 7 and in response to the incident the company shut down the IT servers connected to the ShipManager system operated by the company.

DNV reported that there are no indications that any other of its software or data is affected by the security incident.

“DNV confirms its ShipManager software was victim of a ransomware cyber-attack on the evening of Saturday 7 January. DNV experts have shut down ShipManager’s IT servers in response to the incident. All users can still use the onboard, offline functionalities of the ShipManager software.” reads the notice published by the company.

The maritime software supplier launched an investigation into the incident with the help of global IT security partners, it is working to recover operations as soon as possible. The company also reported the incident to the Norwegian authorities.

DNV is working to restore the functionalities of the dedicated ShipManager servers, following a ransomware cyber-attack on 7 January. External technical experts have been engaged to investigate the attack, which also has been reported to the police and other relevant authorities.
