In the first case of its type in Queensland, a 50-year-old man lost $88,000 when offenders managed to get his mobile phone number and bank account details, re-register his mobile phone, and have secret banking "activation" codes and passwords sent to them directly.

They also cancelled his internet account, leaving the man in the dark for several days while criminals pilfered his savings, unable to track his dwindling account balance online.

Surprisingly, an increased awareness about internet swindles has failed to reduce the number of people falling victim. The amount of money lost by Queenslanders to the well-known Nigerian scams of several years ago has actually doubled from about $400,000 a month in 2006 to $800,000 a month in 2008.
