    Well, that's exactly why you run regular backups of all your critical data, right? ;

    Are they pulling this crap again? Seagate already lost a customer for their mediocre drives and their non existent warranties, which many have complained start from the manufacture date of the drive rather than the sale date. Storage needs to be the most reliable part of my machine. Defective storage means a loss of my data. I keep 3 copies of everything just because I don't trust the quality of any drive. Obviously the failure rates are high or they wouldn't shorten the warranty. I'd happily pay a fair price for a good drive.

    The WD cuts aren't as bad. I see they are keeping 5 years on the Blacks. That's where my money will go, unless SSD is a reasonable alternative.

    Is this warranty reduction some sort of a plot by WD and Seagate to force the consumers to purchase their hard drives while the prices are high? It has been reported that the prices will of hard drives will gradually come down after Feb 2012 onwards and will be down to their regular levels by summer 2012. So, I am wondering whether this is some ingenious scheme by WD and Seagate to scare consumers to buy expensive hard drives to take advantage of extended warranties.

    I had considered that possibility. As we get closer to the day when they are the only 2 companies left, what with Samsung and Hitachi being taken over by them I fear we will see the days when hard drives will cost $300 add have a 90 day warranty. I can't wait for SSDs to become mainstream.
