    Greetings:

I am reading the beginners guide to making a full disk backup and it references this pdf file on naming which when accessed, crashes my acrobat 8.0. Is this file corrupt or still available? It seems I should read this pdf before proceeding setting up my backups. Thanks:

Thanks so much. I downloaded the app and the pdf opened great. I then converted back to adobe acrobat 8 as my default viewer and again the document opened great. Thanks for the tip and the courtesy of providing the link!

OMG, I really don't think I would have understood it all very well without your tutorials. I love reading user guides, but this one from Acronis was dense and did not have all the VERY IMPORTANT perspectives that you have provided. I think your tutorials are CRITICAL for noobie success. I acknowledge you for your generous work.

    labromaniac,

The EXACT same thing happened to me last night when I tried to download it with Reader. It crashed but I persisted, did several restarts (even had to do a ctrl-alt-del one time to end Reader), and it finally came through. But it was abnormally slow, EVEN for this archaic dial-up connection I have.

    Hey GroverH,

My compliments on your Guides, sincerely . . . but . . . maybe you should look into this Reader thing. I wouldn't want to see newbies (like myself) miss out on this valuable resource just because of a glitch in the .pdf downloading with Reader.

As I said, I finally got it but that's only because I'm accustomed to doing restarts as a first effort in troubleshooting something (and they often solve the problem, like they did this time). Other newbies may not try that.

Again, my sincere compliments on your work . . .

Thanks for pointing out the problem guys.

Seems that the new Adobe Reader v8.0 doesn't play nicely with the embeded link to another pdf file contained within the "Restoring" beginner's guide (Adobe Reader v7.0 works just fine). Don't know if this is a bug in Adobe Reader 8.0 or whether the .pdf generator utility used Grover needs updating and the .pf file then recreated/uploaded to Wilders' server.

I will discuss this with GroverH and Administration off-line in order to try and resolve the issue.

EDIT: Just tried entering the link https://www.wilderssecurity.com/supportfiles/unique-drive-naming.pdf directly into IE 7.0 and found that Adobe Reader 8.0 still bombed out partway through downloading the file. o_O

I got rid of Adobe and have been using Foxit for some time now because Acrobat became so bloated. Foxit works fine with this file.

    Hi Menorcaman,
just to add to the symptom list and really confuse things, I have v7.0.8 installed on two machines. One loads the pdf into a Adobe Acrobat v7.0.8, and the other loads the pdf into Adobe Acrobat v7.0.8 hosted within IE.

The first one works fine, the second one crashes. :D

    Hi F,

Something strange going on here o_O. I Uninstalled Reader 8.0 and reinstalled Reader 7.0.9.

I can load the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file direct into Adobe Reader without error. However, if I then load the URL for the .pdf file into IE, Adobe Reader comes up with an error. Now comes the "strange" part - if I "CLOSE" the error message and refresh the browser's web page, the file will proceed to load without any further error. o_O

I'm going to unistall Reader 7.0.9, reinstall 8.0 and repeat the same test shortly. Will post outcome when done.

    Regards

I get this too on my Vista system with Adobe Reader 8.0.0 installed. If I save the file to the hard drive and open it, it opens fine. If I start Reader and paste the link into the file open box, it opens fine. However, if I try to open it in IE7, Reader stops with 228.87KB of 604.82KB downloaded and shows the error message "Adobe Reader 8.0 has stopped working". There is no "OK" button to push, only CANCEL which drops back to IE7.

O.K. Carried out some more checks and here is the score:

    1. Adobe Reader 7.0.9

    a. Fire up IE 7.0, browse to GroverH's <"Restoring" beginner's guide> then click on the embeded link for the "Assign unique names to your disk drives" pdf file. Adobe Reader will begin loading the file and then stop with the error message "Adobe Reader 7.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Click the "CLOSE" button in the error dialogue box and then refresh the web page OR load the URL https://www.wilderssecurity.com/supportfiles/unique-drive-naming.pdf into a new IE Browser Tab and the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file loads correctly without further error.

    b. Start Adobe Reader 7 directly and you can open the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file without an error.

    2. Adobe Reader 8.0

    a. Fire up IE 7.0, browse to GroverH's <"Restoring" beginner's guide> then click on the embeded link for the "Assign unique names to your disk drives" pdf file. Adobe Reader will begin loading the file and then stop with the error message "Adobe Reader 8.0 has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Click the "CLOSE" button in the error dialogue box and then refresh the web page OR load the URL https://www.wilderssecurity.com/supportfiles/unique-drive-naming.pdf into a new IE Browser Tab and this time the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file still fails to load fully and the error message is repeated.

    b. Start Adobe Reader 8 directly and you can, once again, open the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file without an error.

So it seems there is a problem loading the "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file into Adobe Reader 7 and 8 via the IE 7.0's browser, albeit the symptoms are somewhat different. o_O

    Ideas anyone??

    Regards

It's not just IE7. I get the same Reader crash/error with XP, IE6 and Reader 7.0.9 when clicking the embedding link.

I don't think it the embedding like that is causing the problem since it does exactly the same thing if I just paste the link directly into IE and try and load it. It's most likely an IE Reader plug-in related problem, although redistilling the PDF with some different options would probably fix it.

I have tried to open the naming pdf from the link in the Restoring pdf from within Firefox and it causes Adobe Reader 8.0 to close and want to send a error report to MS!

    Edit
Just tried the link for the naming pdf at the bottom of GroverH post at 8 above and it works fine in Firefox

    Edit 2
But it doesn't work if you click the link in the Restoring pdf

    Hi all,

Grover has recreated a revised "unique-drive-naming.pdf" file that loads correctly via the Adobe Reader 8.0/IE shell extension. It has now been loaded onto our server and I'm pleased to report that the link in the "Recovery" beginner's guide is functioning without error once more.

    Regards
