confused about firewall wars

after reading this two articles, i 'm really confused, wich idea is more secure.

but today, it seems no personal firewalls are traditional proxy-based firewall. so we home users are left only by one choise: packet-filterings firewall.

 

What can be said ? Everybody is right

But actually, the most interesting thing would be a real-life statistic on the different security incidents and successful attacks. As far as I know there is none trusted, presentive and public source of such information
