I heard that AVG was a good free anti-virus tool and decided to give it a try.

It looks fine but I am unsure of the configuration in the E-Mail Scanner section.

Should there be a tick in the box for 'Use Outlook Express Plugin' I do use Outlook Express as for all of my E-Mail.

    Many thanks

    Rosie

Well,if it has specific plugin then i recommend you use it. Or try with or without and see whats better. Use EICAR file for testing :)

dear Rosie, if you use Outlook Express then you should use that plugin for sure. if you are looking for a free AV then go for something better than AVG.

    1. Panda Platinum 7 ( AV + Firewall) link.

    2. eTrust EZ 6.2 link.

    3. AntiVir PE link.

they are all better performers than AVG and they are sorted out in the order of preference. by the way its my opinion, i used and tested them all.

You forgot to mention avast! Home Edition (Free) www.avast.com ;)
In my opinion (and tests) much better than all listed above (AntiVir lacks Mail scanner anyway).

Look at the link. It should answer a lot of questions about email scanning with AVG.

no RejZor, i didn't forget about AVAST. its mainly due to the fact that it lacks a full blown heuristics which is very important these days. also it lacks configurability. can't you see i didn't mention the eTrust Antivirus? all for some reasons.

dear BengalBob, our wise Yoda answered your question. Panda is fully functional in EVERY way.

dear Parabola, i didn't include BitDefender Free version as it lacks a Real-Time scanner. its the most important part of an AV software. BitDefender is very good but the Free version is good only as a backup scanner.
