Businesswoman who illegally deleted thousands of company files is sentenced

Danielle Bulley, of Tockwith, is one of only a few dozen people per year to be successfully prosecuted in the UK under the Computer Misuse Act.

The 58-year-old was previously a director of a property marketing business which went into liquidation.
A new company was launched using the assets of the old one. Several months after resigning she gained access to the new company’s servers and permanently deleted all their data – more than 5,000 documents in total.

The victim who ran the new firm said Bulley’s actions caused job losses and the loss of almost £100,000. [...] the company could no longer function and had to fold.

She was charged with computer misuse offences and was given an 18-month community order and unpaid work requirement when she appeared for sentence at York Crown Court today.

“During our investigation, it became clear that Bulley had left the original company on a bad note, but the deletion of thousands of files containing vital information was catastrophic for the victim. It dealt the new business a blow from which it never recovered.”

A former counterterrorism analyst who leaked classified information to two journalists, including one he was dating, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison, the U.S. Department of Justice said in a statement Thursday.

Henry Kyle Frese was employed by the Defense Intelligence Agency in 2018 and 2019. Prosecutors said he shared secret details to a journalist he was dating while she authored articles about “certain foreign countries’ weapons systems.”

“When this information was published, it was shared with all of our nation’s adversaries, creating a risk of exceptionally grave harm to the security of this country,” said John C. Demers, an assistant Attorney General for national security.
Frese was sentenced in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia. He had pleaded guilty in February to violating the Espionage Act and faced up to 10 years in prison.

Reyes Daniel Ruiz, 35, of Tracy, is allowed to leave his home for “verified employment, medical needs and religious services,” according to the sentencing terms. He has also been ordered to pay nearly $125,000 in fines and restitution, court records show.

“By his estimation, he downloaded approximately two terabytes of data, and possessed between 1,000 and 4,000 private images and videos,” Kaleba wrote in a sentencing memo.
The defense argued that Ruiz, who has no criminal history, deserved leniency because he accepted responsibility quickly.

Just when U.S. attorneys may have thought they were free of obstacles in their case against an alleged Russian hacker, a new one has emerged: the judge presiding over the trial.

Judge William Alsup openly criticized U.S. Attorney Michelle Kane on Tuesday, as the trial of Yevgeniy Nikulin resumed amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Alsup’s latest complaint came in response to prosecutor Michelle Kane’s suggestion that phone records collected from Nikulin’s time behind bars were evidence of guilt.

“If that is evidence of guilt, then God help us in this country,” Alsup said in comments first reported by Courthouse News.
“I don’t see a lot of evidence this particular defendant did this,” the judge went on.

Nikulin has been convicted of hacking LinkedIn and Dropbox back in 2012, which resulted in the theft of 117 million usernames and passwords that he tried to sell to other people on Russian—language forums. He was also found guilty of trafficking Formspring data. A man who works at the customer service unit of state-owned telecommunication company Telkomsel was arrested for allegedly stealing personal data of social media sensation Denny Siregar, police said on Friday.

The suspect is identified by initials F.P.H., 27, who works at Telkomsel’s Grapari office in Surabaya, East Java.

“He has access to personal data of Telkomsel customers,” Chief Comr. Reinhard Hutagaol, a senior investigator at the National Police’s cyber crime unit, told reporters in Jakarta.

A Cypriot national has been extradited to the US to face charges of hacking into review portal Ripoff Report, extorting the company, and selling access to its backend to a third-party.

The man, named Joshua Polloso Epifaniou, 21 years, and a resident of Nicosia, Cyprus, arrived in the US on Friday and is scheduled to be arraigned in front of a US court on Monday, July 20, where he'll be formally charged.
THE RIPOFF REPORT HACK
According to court documents obtained by ZDNet, US authorities believe Epifaniou used a brute-force attack to gain access to the credentials of a Ripoff Report employee in October 2016.
The Cypriot then worked with an SEO (search engine optimization) company to remove bad reviews from the Ripoff Report website for the SEO firm's paying customers.

"Epifaniou and his co-conspirator removed at least 100 complaints from the ROR database, charging SEO Company's 'clients' approximately $3,000 to $5,000 for removal of each complaint," the US Department of Justice said in a press release on Saturday.

An employee from a company that operates a well-traveled toll road in southern Ontario has been charged in a major breach of customer data.

York Regional Police allege the 407 Express Toll Route employee used a company computer to access and compile a list of names, addresses and phone numbers of 60,000 customers in specific areas.
They say the suspect, 37-year-old Varun (Bobby) Saini of Toronto, is charged with mischief to data and unauthorized use of a computer.

The investigation began in May 2018 after the toll route operator reported a breach, describing it as an “inside theft of data.”

Ahmedelhadi Yassin Serageldin, 67, was sentenced [PDF] in a Massachusetts federal district court earlier this week. Back in January, he pleaded guilty to one count of willfully retaining national defense information.

Uncle Sam said Serageldin copied as many as 31,000 pages of classified documents and took them home using a portable Western Digital hard drive, hardware he denied owning. Some of it even ended up on the laptop of his lover.

The 18-month sentence, plus one year of probation and a $10,000 fine, is actually something of a win for Serageldin. Citing his efforts to thwart the investigation, prosecutors had earlier asked for a 60-month prison term. Serageldin's lawyers had sought three years' probation.

"While Mr Serageldin’s actions were wrong and foolish, he did not betray his country or sabotage his important work for Raytheon," Serageldin's team told the court.

Two former Twitter employees who were last fall charged with spying on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia may have charges against them dropped at the recommendation of US prosecutors, according to Bloomberg.

It is unclear at this time why the US is pushing to have the case against the two men, Ahmad Abouammo and Ali Alzabarah, dismissed. But lawyers in San Francisco submitted the recommendation to a judge on Tuesday. It has yet to be approved.
A third man, a Saudi citizen named Ahmed Almutairi, was also implicated in the operation as the recruiter who convinced Abouammo and Alzabarah to spy on Saudi dissidents using internal Twitter tools.

The US has filed new and expanded charges against two former Twitter employees and a third individual for allegedly spying on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia.

The three men have now been charged with acting as agents of a foreign government, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and wire fraud. One individual, former Twitter employee Ahmad Abouammo, was also charged with three counts of money laundering and falsification of records to obstruct the investigation.
These new charges are part of a superseding indictment, meaning they’ll replace the charges that were already in place. They come shortly after US prosecutors recommended to have earlier charges dropped.

A Mississippi radio host has been arrested and charged with three counts of simple assault, stalking, obscene electronic communication, and cyber-stalking, which is a felony.

William "Napoleon" Edwards was taken into custody on Tuesday for allegedly cyber-stalking a Hinds County supervisor. In a court hearing held on Wednesday, Municipal Court Judge Ali Shamsideen set Edwards' bond at $20,000.
Previously, Edwards has used his online platform to call out the mayor, the police chief, and even local pastors. But the host's on-air treatment of David Archie prompted the supervisor to accuse Edwards of cyber-stalking.

Archie claims Edwards made death threats against him and falsely accused him of being a convicted felon. The supervisor alleges that during a Facebook Live broadcast that took place last weekend, Edwards threatened to execute him.

A 30-year-old Moldovan man pleaded guilty on Friday for creating FastPOS, a strain of malware designed to infect computers processing payment card data from Point-of-Sale (POS) systems.
Valerian Chiochiu, known in the hacking world as "Onassis" (after the Greek shipping magnate who married Jacqueline Kennedy), was part of the Infraud criminal organization.

According to the US Department of Justice, Chiochiu sold the FastPOS malware on the forum, and then provided support for paying customers.
Last month, Sergey Medvedev (Infraud username "Stells"), one of the two Infraud administrators, pleaded guilty for his involvement in the forum.

Chiochiu now becomes the second Infraud member to plead guilty for his crimes and is scheduled to be sentenced on December 11, later this year.

A judicial candidate in Louisiana has been charged with hacking into state computers and sharing confidential court documents with a friend.
Attorney Trina Chu allegedly committed the offenses while working as a law clerk to now retired Chief Judge Henry Brown in 2018.

According to a statement released by Caddo Parish sheriff Steve Prator, Chu copied sensitive court documents from the Louisiana 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals onto a USB flash drive.
The sheriff said that Chu's alleged criminal activity was exposed "after a thorough investigation involving search warrants served to email providers, digital forensic examinations, and in person interviews."
