A convicted hacker who's serving 10 years in prison for breaking into computer systems of security firms and law-enforcement agencies has been called to testify to a federal grand jury in Virginia.

Supporters of Jeremy Hammond, part of the Anonymous hacking group, say he's been summoned to testify against his will to a grand jury in Alexandria on Tuesday.

Four Peruvians Sentenced for Overseeing Spanish-Speaking Call Centers That Threatened and Extorted U.S. Consumers Friday, August 30, 2019

Four residents of Lima, Peru, charged with overseeing a series of call centers that threatened and extorted Spanish-speaking victims in the United States, have been sentenced to prison, the Department of Justice and U.S. Postal Inspection Service announced.
As part of their guilty pleas, Podesta, Polo, and Portocarrero each admitted that their Peruvian call centers contacted U.S. consumers, many of whom were elderly and vulnerable, using Internet-based calls.

A 21-year-old from Vancouver, Washington pleaded guilty today to creating and operating multiple iterations of DDoS botnets made up of home routers and other networking and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
Kenneth Currin Schuchman, known online as Nexus Zeta, rented access to these botnets to others, but he also used the botnets to launch DDoS attacks against various targets himself, according to court documents obtained by ZDNet.

Today's guilty plea also sheds more light into how Schuchman operated. These details were not initially included in the original three-page indictment that Alaskan authorities filed in August 2018.
The biggest revelation from today's guilty plea is that Nexus Zeta did not act alone, but worked together with two other hackers -- identified in court documents as Vamp and Drake.

The accused Zhang bribed Internet Cafe administrators under the guise of contacting business, asking them to implant the “mining” program into the computer of the Internet Cafes while maintaining the Internet Cafe system, so as to control it remotely. A pair of 20-somethings hacked into a secure medical database to steal the personal information of 38 North Jersey public employees, most of whom were cops, and posted the information online, officials said.

Evan V. Koulikov, 21, of Spring Valley, New York and Eric A. Williams, 24, of New City, New York, were arrested on Aug. 22 and charged with doxxing, which is the practice of posting online the personal information of someone, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced Wednesday.
Koulikov was facing a slew of other charges including unlawful access of a network or database, stalking and harassment, according to a release.

Doxxing can include posting a person’s full name, date of birth, social security number, home address, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, names of relatives or social media usernames, prosecutors said.

University students Jirapat Yuenying, 20, and Supawat Weeraburut, 21, were arrested at their house in Muang district of Khon Kaen on Monday, Pol Col Siriwat Deepor, deputy commander of the Technology Crime Suppression Division, said on Thursday. Police seized their computers and mobile phones.
He said a representative of a food delivery company complained to police that the suspects had hacked into the firm's computer system, and in 30 minutes had stolen codes for discounts on food from about 10 suppliers.

According to Pol Col Siriwat the two young men confessed they had learned hacking from dark websites, and used their knowledge to steal about 1,000 discount codes.
The two suspects were charged with computer hacking and theft. The counts carry prison terms of up to five years.

A former Rancho Cotate High School student has been convicted in a plot involving a dark web criminal who was paid to email threats targeting the school and its students, authorities said Tuesday.

Authorities said the case began on Feb. 27, 2017 when school officials received a bomb threat by phone at 5:45 p.m. The school was not in session at the time, but members of the school athletic teams and some staff were on campus and were evacuated.
Detectives from Rohnert Park Public Safety began working with the FBI to determine who was responsible for the threats.

FBI Agents further assisted local detectives with the analysis of virtual currency and other financial transactions, as well as dark web portal transactions and eventually a former student was identified as the individual who solicited and paid for the threats in 2017.
He was arrested earlier this year and was recently convicted of the crimes. No other details about the suspect was released.

After last year winning a legal battle which saw the effective shutdown of sites LoveROMs and LoveRETRO, Nintendo is now taking aim at RomUniverse founder Matthew Storman for "brazen" and "mass-scale" copyright and trademark infringement.

"The Website is among the most visited and notorious online hubs for pirated Nintendo video games. Through the Website, Defendants reproduce, distribute, monetize, and offer for download thousands of unauthorized copies of Nintendo's video games," Nintendo's complaint reads.

RomUniverse, which has been running for a decade, saw its visitor numbers rise following Nintendo's 2018 legal victory and announced that it would continue to offer Nintendo ROMs, TorrentFreak report. Unsurprisingly, this didn't go down well with the Japnese firm.
Nintendo is looking to, again unsurprisingly, shut RomUniverse down, and it's also seeking statutory damages of $150,000 per infringing game and up to $2,000,000 for each trademark infringement. As noted by TorrentFreak, which is much better at maths than us INQ staffers, theoretical damages could reach more than $100m.

Police in France have arrested a 20-year-old man for his role in blackmailing thousands of French and international users with so-called sextortion emails over the past few months.

The suspect, whose name has not been released, was arrested on Monday, September 9, by officers from the Office of Combating Cybercrime (OCLCTIC) at the Paris Airport after returning to France from Ukraine.
Reports from Radio France and other local French media [1, 2, 3] said the man is a French citizen living in Ukraine. He's now been placed under judicial control and banned from leaving the country.

A male registered nurse from South Elgin who stole sexual photos and videos from the phone of a Naperville woman being treated for substance abuse has been sentenced to court supervision and 20 days at the DuPage County work program.

Mark Luis, 36, of the 700 block of Waterside Drive, was found guilty of misdemeanor computer tampering in a bench trial and sentenced Friday by DuPage County Judge Brian Telander. The judge dismissed felony charges of non-consensual dissemination of a private sexual image and computer fraud.
Authorities alleged Luis, a former nurse at Winfield-based Northwestern Medicine Central DuPage Hospital, accessed the phone of a patient and forwarded nearly 75 images and videos the patient had taken of herself.

The activity was discovered “when the victim synced the phone to her iCloud account when she got home” and discovered the photos and videos had been sent “to a phone number that she did not (recognize,) and that all the images and videos were sent when the phone was not in her possession,” a state’s attorney’s office news release said at the time of Luis’ arrest.

A New Bedford man was sentenced yesterday for violating conditions of his supervised release by engaging in another cybercrime after being released from federal custody after two prior convictions.

Cameron Lacroix, 30, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Senior Judge Mark L. Wolf to 15 months in prison, to be served consecutively to a nine-month sentence previously imposed by U.S. District Court Chief Judge Patti B. Saris.
Lacroix was first convicted in 2014 of access device fraud and computer fraud [...] Lacroix also hacked into law enforcement computer servers, including a local Massachusetts police department.

The company discovered that Lacroix used the usernames and passwords of other employees to load funds onto pre-paid credit cards, which he then used to withdraw cash at ATMs. Thereafter, the Court revoked Lacroix’s supervised release in both criminal cases.

Named in the four-count indictment are: Ronald D. Roginsky, 52, of Brunswick; John M. Ambrose, 40, of Chicago, and Eric S. Angle, 52, of Wexford, Pennsylvania.

All three are charged with one count each of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, conspiracy to import controlled substances, distributing controlled substances by means of the Internet, and conspiracy to launder money.
Roginsky, Ambrose and Angle were members of the “qu4ntum” drug trafficking organization. The organization maintained and controlled the qu4ntum dark net vendor account on AlphaBay, Dream Market, Wall Street and other dark net marketplaces.
