According to a new study 31 percent of companies have moved workloads to the cloud within the last six months compared to only 18 percent six months ago.

Based on a survey of almost 1,000 IT decision makers, the report from cloud migration specialist Next Pathway shows 36 percent are migrating to the cloud to prevent customers from leaving for more personalized solutions offered by competitors that are using the cloud to enable a superior digital experience.

As companies look to become cloud-first organizations, they want to accelerate the transformation benefits enabled by the cloud, not just the operational efficiencies. However, there is a recognition that in many cases they need help to achieve this.

Over 40 percent are concerned that they don't have the internal skills to plan or execute workload or data migration or to select the right cloud platform. While 54 percent fear that when moving workloads to the cloud they won't know which ones are necessary and which ones can be retired.

"As companies move to the cloud, they realize that these initiatives are as complex as they are critically important to the business," adds Mathur. "Hence, companies are demanding more assistance at every stage of the migration, from planning through to cut over. [...]"

Federal agency demand for cloud service products in the General Services Administration’s (GSA) FedRAMP marketplace showed a 60 percent year-over-year jump in the first half of Fiscal Year 2021, as agencies continued their move to cloud services in order to deal with pandemic-driven tech needs and IT modernization priorities.

The Federal agency demand picture for cloud services was one of the main takeaways from an address by Acting FedRAMP Director Brian Conrad at an August 18 event organized by FCW.

Agency Demand Growth
Conrad said FedRAMP’s work on behalf of Federal agencies “has taken on greater urgency, given the continued need to work virtually in a secure environment, and use these new cloud technologies that have helped the government become more resilient.”

He said the results of the program’s work have grown dramatically in recent years, to a total of 230 authorized cloud service products in its marketplace currently, up from 200 in September 2020, and 100 two years before that.

“We’ve also seen a re-use increase of 85 percent for cloud products compared to the pre-pandemic period,” Conrad said.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) is seeking to accelerate the pace of cloud adoption by local authorities across the UK, Ireland and Spain by offering them a three-month free trial of its infrastructure and software services.

Participating councils will be offered access to a bundle of the cloud giant’s services, which will be delivered directly by the AWS Government Transformation Team in collaboration with the company’s partners.

“The AWS Government Transformation Team will offer advice to support a local council’s wider digital aspirations, while consulting partners run discovery and solution workshops in support of the council’s transformation goals,” said AWS in a statement.

Speaking to Computer Weekly about the launch of the programme, Max Peterson, vice-president of AWS’s worldwide public sector unit, said the programme is geared towards “amplifying” the existing learning and technology resources the company has available to local authority IT buyers.

“The programme is really just another step down that path towards helping educate people on how to use modern IT cloud services to meet the everyday demands of citizens,” he said.

Open Infrastructure Foundation hails surge in OpenStack deployments as Microsoft joins ranks

The Open Infrastructure Foundation claims the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic has led to renewed levels of demand for OpenStack-based public and private cloud, with the organisation reporting a 66% year-on-year rise in the number of cores deployed.

“One of the things that is really incredible when we look at the data this year is just how rapidly the footprints have been growing out there for OpenStack clouds,” he said.
“We saw 66% growth in the total number of cores year over year. This is pretty phenomenal, because I don’t think we’ve seen this growth rate since the early days of OpenStack and we certainly didn’t see organisations adding 10 million cores in a year.”

The organisation is reaping the benefits of the fact that, as Collier described it, there is “more open source than ever, and there’s more infrastructure than ever” being deployed, which are both trends the pandemic has fuelled.

“If we look at infrastructure growth as a whole, there’s been a lot written about how in the past year or so, due to the pandemic and so forth, infrastructure demand has just grown astronomically,” he said. “Several years’ worth of future growth have been pulled in and, all of a sudden, everyone needs more infrastructure.

On this point, Collier said OpenStack is now deployed in 170 public cloud datacentres around the world. “That’s more datacentres than any other cloud technology from a public cloud standpoint,” he added.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) has set its sight towards having two-thirds of its workloads in the public cloud by the end of the 2022 financial year.

Speaking during VMware's virtual 2021 VMworld conference, Le Friedman detailed that the bank's decision to stand up three "execution factories" has been the driving force behind the pace for the bank's migration of its workload to the cloud, a project that only kicked off a year ago.

One of the factories, Le Friedman said, is a rehost migration factory, which allows the bank to migrate its on-premise virtual machines into VMC on AWS.

"That allowed us to migrate quite a lot of compute capability into the cloud environment. A key win there was our rehost factory was able to migrate over 3,500 VMs into the cloud environment just in the last financial year," she said.
"The pace that we were going, at one point in time, we were migrating about 500 VMs per week. I think that put us into the top tier in terms pace, but also … we're probably the largest VMC environment in Asia and Japan."

In July last year, CBA announced it was planning to send the majority of its apps to the cloud. At the time, CBA boss Matt Comyn was pushing the idea of the yellow and black bank becoming the "best digital experience in Australia, bar none".

Curtin University to swap siloed IT infrastructure for AWS cloud by 2022

By the end of next year Curtin University will have moved a "vast majority" of its IT systems and data into a digital platform hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) as part of a multi-year agreement between the two organisations.

The agreement will see AWS assist Curtin University replace its current IT architecture made up of multiple data centres with an AWS cloud-hosted platform. The university described that the existing architecture resulted in "fragmented IT systems, application islands, and data siloes that made it difficult for the university to innovate and build new experiences or services for students, researchers, and staff".

"We are moving from fragmented and siloed systems to a self-managing platform in the cloud," Curtin University CIO Jason Cowie said.
"Through this AWS collaboration, Curtin will be powered to deliver elevated digital experiences for students and staff and allow better insights into how to enhance campus life, enable lifelong learning, and develop a future ready workforce while ensuring their data is secure.

Shifting to the cloud has become an increasingly popular option among Australian universities. At the end of last year, the Queensland University of Technology spoke about how it has continued to push ahead with its five-year cloud strategy, noting the move would mean the university can provide consistency for students and other staff members, as well as access to quality data.

Also last year, the University of Sydney turned to AWS cloud to accelerate genomics research to prevent the Tasmanian devil from extinction, and more recently to establish a koala genome library.

A new report from O'Reilly finds that 30 percent of all respondents in almost every industry cite managing cost as the most important initiative their company is undertaking related to public cloud adoption.

Regulatory requirements (21 percent) and cost (19 percent) are the main challenges among organizations not currently using cloud computing. 47 percent say that their organizations are pursuing a cloud first strategy, while 30 percent say that their organizations are already cloud native, and 37 percent say that they planned to be cloud native within three or more years.

"It's a common misconception that cloud computing is inexpensive, which is simply not a reality at corporate scale," says Mike Loukides, vice president of content at O'Reilly.

Among other findings, Amazon Web Services (62 percent), Microsoft Azure (48 percent), and Google Cloud (33 percent) are the most popular cloud solutions, although most respondents are using multiple cloud providers.
Two-thirds of respondents (67 percent) use a public cloud, while 45 percent are using a private cloud, and 55 percent are still using traditional on-premises infrastructure.

So much so, that individuals rarely notice that they are using it to store documents and data instantly, despite the increasing importance that these technologies have in the remote arena. As many organizations continue to see their workforce scattered across different cities and countries, there is a clear urgency to access data safely, and without needing to do so in a physical workplace.

Beyond pandemic-incentivized cloud usage, other businesses will be motivated by the ease and flexibility that these technologies allow -- indeed, many find the ability to scale their operations up or down a very attractive prospect indeed.

Whether this is due to security concerns, the steep cost of implementation, or more general digital transformation barriers, organizations still face some significant obstacles when it comes to a widespread adoption.

A new survey of 650 IT leaders around the world shows that while 96 percent consider their organization's mainframe applications as important or critical to business operations, 98 percent would consider migrating off the platform.

The research conducted by Vanson Bourne for LzLabs shows that the pandemic has boosted modernization plans. 71 percent of organizations report going through or having been through an IT modernization process, compared to 64 percent in 2019 and 61 percent in 2018.

Worryingly, 67 percent of decision makers believe their organization’s mainframe holds them back from innovating, and 58 percent report being concerned that their business could lose its competitive advantage due to the failure of IT to keep pace with business demands.

VMware has announced its Government Services offering has achieved Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) High Authorization from the Joint Authorization Board (JAB). VMware Government Services includes VMware Carbon Black Cloud and VMware SD-WAN on AWS GovCloud in the U.S.

These services aim to allow U.S. government agencies and customers supporting the government to migrate, manage, and operate sensitive workloads in the cloud. In addition to SD-WAN, Government Services also includes software-as-a-service (SaaS), platform-as-a-service, and infrastructure-as-a-service capabilities. These services deliver applications “at the speed that government agencies demand” and enable organizations to operate across data centers, the edge, and cloud, according to a press release about the news.

Almost half of businesses are struggling with cloud costs

A new report published today by business monitoring firm Anodot reveals 49 percent of businesses find it difficult to get cloud costs under control, and 54 percent believe their primary source of cloud waste is a lack of visibility into cloud usage.

The report, based on a survey of over 130 US-based IT directors and executives, shows 91 percent of respondents report they currently have IT infrastructure in the cloud, while 60 percent say that migrating more workloads to the cloud is their top cloud initiative in the coming year.

Renault confirms Google as preferred cloud partner

Renault Group has named Google as its preferred cloud partner, as part of an announcement about the pair’s plans to extend the reach of the multi-year cloud deal they signed in 2020.

As reported by Computer Weekly at the time, Renault turned to Google Cloud to help it bolster the efficiency and future development of its in-house data aggregation platform, which it uses to connect and collect digital information from more than 2,500 machines scattered across 22 of its firm’s global sites.

Most U.S. federal agencies began the process of moving their data to cloud-based services about ten years ago. In 2011, the White House issued their Cloud-First strategy, requiring agencies to evaluate safe and secure cloud technologies. This marked the first step taken to accelerate cloud adoption amongst government agencies in a bid to help reduce costs and improve the efficiency of services provided to citizens.

Since then, many agencies have begun moving more and more of their infrastructure to cloud platforms. Recent research revealed that nearly two-thirds of federal IT leaders are either using or starting to use the cloud for mission critical applications. However, despite this uptick in adoption, many federal agencies continue to grapple with cloud migration challenges.

Due to the sensitivity of the data housed within these networks and largely due to the inoperability of the data migration and system functionality with rising technology, some agencies have continued to use these outdated operating systems, legacy databases, and other forms of information systems and technologies because the mission and the protection of data is bigger than the next big ticket in updated technology.

It is impossible to pick up these legacy systems and just drop them into a cloud environment and then everything continues to operate as usual. Migrating to the cloud requires strategic planning as well as ensuring that during migration the data remains protected.
