The NSA is renting its technology to U.S. companies.

I don't think anyone believes the bit about national security any more. Who could they even believably be defending the public from, that they would need that kind of authority?

What scares me though is that people are openly criticizing the NSA pretty much everywhere, from all quarters, and yet the spying continues (and no attempts are made to stifle the critics). It's like they know full well that they'll never be held accountable for anything, no matter who says what about them. Here's to hoping that's hubris...

The only ones that can really stop it are other countries, and that is only for their own citizens and their governments. I suppose they could threaten future agreements, but that could hurt them too so I do not see it a very likely move.

Oh, and Gullible, I too disagree with using this national security argument every time questions arise. I think there would be far less suspicion towards them if they just came out and told everyone what all of this was for. I do not think there are enough terrorists and plots in the world to need this much secrecy. Are we on the verge of being invaded by aliens?

They aren't protecting the people from anything. The government and filthy rich are protecting themselves FROM the people. They surveil everyone because we're all potential enemies.

It is very strange to hear Google talk this way, but they are right in my opinion. If the world starts "going local", it will do a lot of damage. Now if we could just get Google to take their own advice. Remember Google, it is our data.
