I did a search in this forum of Wilders & found no recent thread on Chromium browser for Linux. Hence, I opened this thread so as to seek a bit of help from you folks. Background: I now use Firefox (FF) browser. I want a "back-up browser" for FF. In a separate thread I asked about using Opera & got strong answers that made me question its privacy. Why? Because I learned, from those comments, that Opera is owned by Golden Brick in China. Since I am Sino-phobic when it comes to privacy & security, I am now considering Chromium as my FF back-up. BTW: I use Zorin. It offers 2 version of Chromium: (1) "plain" Chromium & (2) Ungoogled-Chromium. As of this moment. "plain" Chromium is version 119.0.6045.123 whereas Ungoogled-Chromium is a bit earlier version -- 119.0.6045.105. ==> REQUEST: Any and all comments about Chromium will be greatly appreciated -- its security, stability, ease of use, etc -- WHATEVER you care to say about it.
Hello bellgamin, I take it the refreshing tropical air in Hawaii has played a key role in keeping you so healthy and happy all these years I realize you are asking specifically about Chromium browsers, however... As for browser security on Linux, I'd say you can't go wrong with either Chromium-based or Mozilla (Firefox)-based browsers. We discussed this not long ago in this thread regarding the robust seccomp-bpf sandbox in chromium browsers here and as pointed out by @summerheat running in Mozilla browsers here. Where you do have to be careful is with browser extensions. These you want to limit as much as possible to only essential ones like ad blockers, and those that have had a long history of trustworthiness. Firefox of course has the "Recommended" Add-ons, those that have been carefully vetted for being safe and trustworthy to use. As for usability, I find both are easy enough to use, but I haven't been running Chromium-based browsers for a while now, simply because I prefer the edge in privacy that Mozilla browsers offer. I also haven't run into any stability issues with Chromium or Mozilla browsers either on Linux or Windows. So in short, I don't see any concerns about running a Chromium browser as a backup to anything you are running as the primary browser.
