Chromebooks Not Real Laptops? Google Adds Support for Windows Applications

Google has recently announced that all its Chromebooks would be able to run Windows applications following an agreement with VMware that basically implements VMware Horizon DaaS on all devices.

While this is clearly good news for all those owning a Chromebook or planning to buy one, it's also the first serious answer that Google gives to Microsoft's Scroogled campaign, as the Redmond-based software company has launched several attacks supposed to blast some of its products.

In a recent refresh of the Scroogled campaign, Microsoft launched videos to state that Chromebooks aren't real laptops because they cannot run Office and Windows applications, recommending users to go for a traditional notebook that can cope with much more productive tasks.

Google, on the other hand, is using this new agreement with VMware to response to Microsoft, mentioning in its official announcement that those still running on Windows XP, the OS version that will get the axe in April, could easily pick a Chromebook as an alternative and secure way to do their work.

"As the countdown to Windows XP end of life continues, deploying Chromebooks and taking advantage of a DaaS environment ensures that security vulnerabilities, application compatibility and migration budgets will be a thing of the past," Google said.

Very good move by Google. While Im not planning to buy one anytime soon, I do like it when more competition arises. As much as I despise Google, Im wishing them all the best in the chromebook business.

You determine Laptops by the capabilities of its hardware, not what OS is pre-installed on it. Not to mention Chrome OS isn't lacking if you dig deep enough into the terminal.

I thought they were made for people with your name? Just joking, but it is limited as in newbie desktop and techie terminal with little in between.
