Anyone know how to fix the following Windows error:

"CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the master file table (MFT) bitmap.

Correcting errors in the Volume Bitmap.

Windows found problems with the file system.

Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these"

    ----------------------------

I've run CHKDSK with the /F and /R options and I keep getting this same message when I check it again.

Any help/info fixing this would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Birdman :)

    1)

"chkdsk X: /R" is ok. The R swith include F switch...

    2)

According to this page at MSDN:
    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms828309.aspx

" CHKDSK discovered free space marked as allocated in the volume bitmap.
    Explanation:

Chkdsk will mark the space as free so the file system can use it.
    User Action:

No user action is needed. "

    3) Try to find some hints here:

    Start | run | eventvwr.msc

Check in both applications and system for error and warning with the source "disk" or "filesystem" ...

It's easier to find clues about these errors with the source and the event ID
    at this web site: http://www.eventid.net/

It's possible also to replace the useless link in the eventviewer by an other link to EventID with this Gilles Ronsin's PHP script: http://gilles.ronsin.free.fr/#EventId

There is 2 .reg files in this page : one to enable the link, the other to return to the previous situation.

Direct download 1 st script: http://gilles.ronsin.free.fr/reg/WXP-NewEvntVwr.reg

    Direct Download second script:http://gilles.ronsin.free.fr/reg/WXP...Vwr_normal.reg

and finally it's possible to add EventID in the Firefox search engines:
    http://mycroft.mozdev.org/download.h...mitform=Search

    4) Check the S.M.A.R.T. data :

    SpeedFan:
    http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

    Article about S.M.A.R.T.:
What is S.M.A.R.T. and how can we use it to avoid data disaster?
    http://www.almico.com/sfarticle.php?id=2

No more idea. Hope this help.

    Let us know.

    :)

    Hi Climenole,

Thanks for the research and helpful info.

The only error thus far is:

Event Viewer > System > Service Control Manager (7023)

I even ran CHKDSK from the XP Recovery Console CD....still getting the same message.

    Hi Birdman :)

Not related to the disk or filesystem:
    http://www.eventid.net/display.asp?eventid=7023&eventno=345&source=Service Control Manager&phase=1

Hmmm... If you except this strange error , did your system is working properly? No error, no strange behaviour ?

To be sure run the online disk test with Speed Fan (SMART tab, depth analysis..)
and if the result is good may be the best is to follow this moto:

    Don't fix what's ain't broke

    :)

The only issue is with the CHKDSK and the volume bitmap error. Everything seems to be working fine. I will run the Speed Fan analysis just to make sure.

How do you save/apply the reg change (from link 1) to the registry?

    HI Birdman :)

    click on the link
save the lines into a text file with notepad or an other text editor
under the name you want. Change the extension from .txt to .reg

Right click on the .reg file
choose to open with the registry editor
(this add or merge the line in the registry)

    And that's it !

    :)

    Thanks you good sir. :)

Also after runing Speefan's analysis.....everything checked out okay.

Is it normal for CHKDSK to find errors in volume bitmap and file system as it relates to the free space?
