    Hi,

Could someone pls check out the following log on my client's pc. There is definitely a hijacker and possibly some other nasties as I am now unable to login to Windows ME. I receive the following msg: Explorer has caused an error in kernel32.dll and the whole system then freezes.

I have scanned with TDS3 and removed some trojan downloaders and spyware, but can only access safe mode.

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Close all windows except HijackThis and fix the lines listed below in hjt
    then using APM

In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log which will be C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NKICE.DLL
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

Run hijackthis, tick these entries listed below and ONLY these entries, double check to make sure, then make sure all browser & email windows are closed and press fix checked

OOps sorry didn't notice that bit

in that case stay in safe mode where hopefully the infected dll isn't being loaded anyway

and just do the hijackthis part above and hopefully it might fix the problem
then delete these files while still in safe mode

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NKICE.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sp.html (in fact select & delete everything in the temp folder)
    C:\foo.mht

    and delete these folders
    C:\Program Files\QuickSearch
    C:\PROGRAM FILES\IETOOLBAR

    Empty recycle bin
    & then
download CWshredder from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk then Run it
Close all browser windows, click on the cwshredder.exe then click "FIX" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

Reboot After running cwshredder and as soon as possible follow this advice:
Now as CWS Hijacks are normally installed via the byte verifier exploit in M$ JavaVM, just surfing a page with an infected applet can install it with no user participation. So once you’ve run the above, it is vital that you go here, click Scan for updates in the main frame, and download and install all CRITICAL updates recommended.

    Hi Chiana,

Try this to get rid of C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NKICE.DLL
    - Reboot in into safe mode
    - Select command prompt only.
    - type these commands, each line followed by ENTER
    cd windows
    cd system
    del nkice.dll
    exit

Your computer should boot normally now.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    To dvk01 and Pieter,

I have done as you both suggested. The pc is now booting into Windows and the kernel32 error appears intermittently, not sure what the problem is, may the OS needs a reinstall.

Here is the latest HijackThis log:

A big thank you to both of you for all your help and sharing your knowledge. Hopefully the pc is now clean. I have referred my client to the Wilders site to gain more knowledge in regards to pc security. All the people who give advice and knowledge are to be congratulated, you really are very special!
