    Hello

My home page keeps resetting to about:blank regardless of whether I change it or not. I also keep getting warnings from Norton saying that I have the virus ia.dll (Bloodhound.Packed) on my computer that it can not remove.

I used Spybot S&D before running HijackThis

    Hi wjsdunne,

Download and install APM from: http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=apm

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {446BFD7B-12F1-4D2E-9608-F1160F85F49A} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\khohdba.dll

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

    Then start APM.
In the upper window select explorer.exe
In the lower window find and rightclick the BHO from the HijackThis log
Select Unload DLL and click OK on the prompts that follow.

Reboot and scan with AdAware to remove the txt and html protocol association.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello

Thank you very much for your help. I carried out the steps you said and it appeared to do the trick, although it did not seem to safe my home page 100% of the time and now the blasted thing seems to have come back. What should I do, I run Ad-aware and it seems to find the same files everytime even though I quarantine them. What would you suggest?

    Many thanks

    Will

    Hi wjsdunne,

Copy the contents of the bold text to Notepad.
    Name the file Appinit.bat
    Save as type *All Files*
    Save on the Desktop.

    Reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows" windows1.hiv
    ren windows1.hiv windows.txt

    Double click on Appinit.bat
This will create a file on the desktop named windows.txt
Post the content please together with a fresh HijackThis log.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello

Here is the information as instructed. I have repeatedly run Ad-Aware and each time it just comes up with 3 entries for CoolWebSearch, whether I quarantine them or not.

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks

    Will

    Hi wjsdunne,

Use the Recovery Console to delete:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\logfla.dll

Check the items listed below in HijackThis, close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix checked:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = file://C:\DOCUME~1\WILLIA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\sp.html

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,HomeOldSP = about:blank

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4A10A84B-4B72-46C4-A71B-71A784D9BB3B} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\emhkbaa.dll

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [LDM] \Program\BackWeb-8876480.exe

Then reboot and download and run: CWShredder
Use the Fix button and follow the instructions you will receive.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Plan B.

Are you using XP Pro or Home and is your file system NTFS or FAT32?

    Regards,

Then download and save to desktop... this bat file: hiving.bat

Sign off the internet and stay off until all of these steps have been completed.

Double click on the batch to run it. Then Reboot.
(If you have script blocking enabled you will get a warning. Please allow this to run. The script is just producing a message box.)
After a reboot the super hiden nasty file will no longer be loaded and will be visible.

Navigate to and right click this file and select properties:
    C:\WINDOWS\System32\logfla.dll
use the security tab on the file and take ownership.
How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

    Change the 'everyone special' to
'you> with Admin rights-> FULL control
Then try to delete it, if that fails try to rename
    it first to different name+ext.
Then if that fails try to rename it again to different name+ext.

    Ex:
    res.dll > baddie.txt
    baddie.txt > badfile.111
    Few times... Etc.

    Once you have deleted C:\WINDOWS\System32\logfla.dll
Clear the contents of all temp folders and empty the recycle bin.
    Reboot.
    Run CWShredder immediately.
Press the fix button to clean.
    Reboot.

Then run Ad-Aware too as described here: https://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=15913

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hi

    Thanks again for this.

Should I still run the hijackthis and cws shredder part of the original instructions? And if so at what stage?

    Will

First HijackThis, then the following order as in my last post,
or the following order in my last post and then post back with the HijackThis log and we will clean out what's left.
Pretty much boils down to the same.

    Regards,

    Pieter

    Hello

I have been advised to purchase System Mechanic, what is your opinion of this software? Is it worth the money and does it pose any risks?

    Many thanks

    Pieter

Thank you very much for your help, I carried out all of the steps you recommended and it seems to have done the trick. I run Ad-Aware and it doesn't pick up any bad files and there is no issue with my homepage any longer.

Would you mind having a look at one final HijackThis just to clear out anything remaining?

    Mnay thanks again

    Will
