CES, the world’s largest technology show, is pressing on, but with fewer major exhibitors appearing in-person than expected due to rising COVID-19 cases in the United States. On December 22nd, exhibitor Lenovo announced that it would “suspend all on-site activity in Las Vegas,” following announcements from T-Mobile, Amazon, Meta, and others that they’d be ditching as well and despite CES organizers’ statements that the show would go on.

CES 2022 loses another key exhibitor as Intel pulls out of in-person show
The year’s biggest tech show is increasingly moving online

CES 2022’s exodus of exhibitors over rising COVID-19 concerns continues, with the latest withdrawal coming from Intel. The company typically has one of the biggest presences of major tech companies at the show. Intel joins a slew of other key companies skipping this year’s show in-person, which also includes Lenovo, T-Mobile, AT&T, Amazon, Waymo, Meta, Twitter, Pinterest, and iHeartRadio.

And while many major companies have pulled out of attending this year’s conference in person, key participants like GM and Samsung (who are both currently still set to present keynotes at the conference) remain onboard with CES 2022, at least for now.

AMD and OnePlus are the latest to cancel in-person CES 2022 plans

More big names are cancelling in-person CES 2022 plans. CNET notes AMD and OnePlus have both withdrawn their physical presences at the technology event. While they didn't provide detailed explanations, the move was clearly in response to the rise of COVID-19's Omicron variant and the corresponding surge in new cases. AMD is switching its in-person transactions to virtual ones in the "best interest" of everyone's health, the company said in a statement.

The companies join numerous major brands that have backed out of real-world CES involvement, including Amazon, AT&T, GM, Google, Intel, Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft and T-Mobile.

CES to close a day early

The Las Vegas trade show will now take place Jan. 5 through Jan. 7, with in-person events canceled on Jan. 8.

CES has already lost more than 150 in-person exhibitors, including Google, Meta, IBM, Microsoft, Amazon, Intel, GM, Waymo, AMD, Analog Devices, HP, Nikon, Mitsubishi and Mercedes-Benz.

Still, the Consumer Technology Association said it has 2,200 in-person exhibitors on the books, with 143 companies signing on to exhibit in person in the last two weeks. CTA CEO Gary Shapiro said in a statement Friday that CES is “steadfast in its pledge to be the gathering place to showcase products and discuss ideas that will ultimately make our lives better.”
