CERN Ditches Microsoft to ‘Take Back Control’ with Open Source Software

The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, better known as CERN, and also known as home of the Large Hadron Collider, has announced plans to migrate away from Microsoft products and on to open-source solutions where possible.
Why? Increases in Microsoft license fees.

Microsoft recently revoked the organisations status as an academic institution [...] This bumps the cost of various software licenses 10 [...]
‘Microsoft Alternatives Project’
Commercial software fees are not the only reason why the organisation is now evaluating open-source software. The ‘Microsoft Alternatives project’, codename MAlt, also looks to help “take back control”.

“MAlt’s objective is to put us back in control using open software. It is now time to present more widely this project and to explain how it will shape our computing environment,” CERN’s Emmanuel Ormancey explains in a blog post.

Microsoft shrugs off CERN’s planned “Microsoft Alternatives” transition to open-source software after price hike

After a prolonged delay, Microsoft responded to an inquiry regarding its relationship with CERN with the following statement:
We are committed to a consistent application of eligibility requirements for our different licensing options. When we find exceptions to this policy during our ongoing audit processes for compliance, we work directly with customers to ensure their transition to new licensing programs is as seamless as possible.

CERN Replacing Facebook Workplace With A Set Of Open-Source Software Alternatives

We previously covered how CERN has moved away from Microsoft products over licensing fees and instead has begun employing various open-source alternatives. Now this European Organization for Nuclear Research is moving away from Facebook Workplace to instead make use of more open-source software packages.

Facebook Workplace is Facebook's corporate-focused product for internal real-time communication and related communication needs within organizations.
CERN had been making use of Facebook Workplace and in addition to data privacy concerns, they were recently confronted with either paying Facebook or losing administrative rights, no more single sign-on access, and Facebook having access to their internal data. But now they have assembled their own set of software packages to fill the void by abandoning Facebook Workplace.
