Great idea, spying on your own citizens. Hurray for freedom fighters.

Next thing: mandatory cameras in your own home. :thumbd:

Or not allowing the sale or use of equipment (computers, televisions, mobile phones) without a camera.

There was a story here in the USA a couple of years ago relating to exactly this. IIRC, the largest cable TV/ISP provider here (Comcast) proposed the idea of integrating a camera into all DVR boxes so it could see who was in the living room in order to tailor programming more effectively for the demographic.

I don't think Comcast had any ill intentions with this; I think they actually thought this could be a "helpful" technology. But, it goes to show how out of touch these corporate fat cats are with the real world. No one wants this and there was a lot of outrage that Comcast would even suggest it as a possibility.

Am I wrong? Doesn't the UK already have cameras on almost every street corner...I mean, who are these people pushing this?

Voyueristic super paranoids ... sounds like.

On the other hand, it would be a great way to audition your music playing, singing, dancing, miming, standup comic routines,
    not to mention, political speechifying....
    :)

It's just cheaper than more coppers on the beat. Besides, there aren't any cameras in my street, nor in the village I live in. They must all be south of the Watford Gap. Let's face it, anyone daft enough to live south of Watford probably needs watching... :D

Not on every street corner, not right now. But if you walk into some of the poorer sides of UK towns and cities you will almost certainly spot cameras gawping at the locals. Mostly on problem housing estates - doing a decent job (depending on your point of view). The problem with CCTV's are the ones in the town centers - CCTV zones - These have become insidious revenue raising machines. Park/stop on or near a double yellow line lets say ... but only because your car has broken down ... you will get charged, accidently drop a piece of litter, you could find yourself being fined. Machines do not distinguish between the real events and mistakes have to be proven. CCTV's in town centers are peddling moronic petty charges left right and center. Many local councils in UK lost billions when the Icelandic banks collapsed. So now we are being screwed left right and center by the tools available, CCTV. We've also got a government that spends all day dreaming up new laws to catch the man-in-the-street doing wrong Labour is dreaming up 33 new crimes a month

But other than that ... It's brilliant here. We even have an Orwellian theme park, aka London. You must come and visit some time. Bring a big wallet.

I've always wanted to visit, promise not to swim over the hull of the Titanic.. :D

Sounds like the cameras are really more about $$, than security tho..:doubt:

These dreary schemin' pols, but we have them here too...
