I am hoping someone here can point me in the rite direction. I am running XPsp1, NOD, BoClean, Sygate firewall, Giant, Spybot, Spyware guard, and Spyware Blaster. The trouble I am having is with Windows Update. When I try to update I get the error 0x80248011, The help menu pops up and tells me to clean out internet files, cookies, offline content and temporary internet files. I tried this but it didn't help. Then the help menu says if the above does not work try to delete the data store and allow it to rebuild itself. It says

    1. Click Start.
    2. Choose Run.
    3. In the Run box, type services.msc.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Right-click the Automatic Updates Service. ( when I try this it just times out it does not stop the process.)
    6. Click Stop.
After Stopping the Service please rename the folder c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution
    1. Open Windows Explorer
    2. Navigate to the Windows folder
    3. Click on the + next to the Windows folder
    4. Navigate to SoftwareDistribution folder
    5. Right Click on the SoftwareDistribution folder
    6. Select rename from the Menu
    7. Rename the folder to SoftwareDistribution.old and click Enter
Now restart the Automatic Update Service
( When I try this it says Cannot renam it is being used by another service)
    1. Click Start.
    2. Choose Run.
    3. In the Run box, type services.msc.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Right-click the Automatic Updates Service.
    6. Click Start.

I have tried to update with the firewall turned off and still the same error. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanx

Hi divedog, make sure you're running as administrator. When you get to #5 on that list, double-click on auto-updates to open....set type to automatic and start the service. If this works go to IE tools/internet options/general tab and delete cookies, files, and clear history.....

No luck, I think I may have some success if I could get the automatic update service to stop via the command prompt when I try net stop wuauserv it just says could not stop. I have tried updating with automatic updates turned on or off it dosen’t seem to matter.

Still on the general page, open settings, and look inside.
Increasing disc space may also help.......See screenie.....mines set real low, go ahead and bump the slider!

If you go to the update page, you'll see on the left help and support, windows update troubleshooter.
Though quite exhaustive, have a look at this page and see if you can get resolved.....

have you tried rebooting before following the instrutions?, then following the instrutions, that way it might not be in use by another service.
