ok I was trying to backup my C drive onto a Western Digital Passport external drive when I got this "can't read Volume data" error message.

No idea what this means or how to fix it..... suggestions?
using Windows XP with Paragon Hard disk Manager 12

Please clarify, is this during the backup process, before or after? If it is during the 'data writing' process then that means there are bad sectors on the HDD and you would need to use either 'chkdsk /r' from the command prompt or use manufacturer utilities to repair the bad sectors on the drive. Then attempt the backup again.
