Andyman, I was just about to suggest Superantispyware :D Its in Preferences/Repairs, on mine. The task manager fix does work. I use it sometimes.

But yeah check out the links in my profile, Frank.

this one is really good. Goto Ako's list of scanners, and the online scanners, most of them will remove malware. You are probably infected with "something".

frank47, you should pursue Keyboard_Commando's suggestion of following this Wilders post:If you are currently infected. Sounds like you have a rogue Windows Defender since Microsoft does not charge for that software, it's free.

Your PC could require more assistance than can be provided here, and posting your problem in any of the sites mentioned in that post, will offer pinpoint troubleshooting with specific software, to battle whatever malware your PC could have. The sites deal with these situations daily and I suggest that you visit any of them as soon as possible. Good luck!

Run ReEnable it's only 64kb and usually does a good job of enabling your Task Manager, CMD, Regedit, Run, Folder options etc after malware. Once you get control over these tools, it should make things easier.

Also try manually browsing to C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and opening HOSTS in Notepad that way instead of using the Run command.

The sites in the "If you are currently infected" links should be able to get you right again. Check out some of the anti virus boot cd's that you can make yourself and scan the machine with. They might get some elements off - as they work more effectively scanning/removing whilst the operating system is off. But your best bet is running something like Comobofix (which can ONLY be downloaded from bleepingcomputer.com, and use bleeping's forum for guidance how to use Comobofix, as it is a specialist tool) Combofix and Malwarebytes + SuperAntiSpyware are really good right now for clearing rogue apps. Check out ATF Cleaner too - Clear the temp files with it.

BTW, if possible, disconnect the infected computer from accessing the internet. These rogues are continually downloading further junk. It's best to isolate it as much as possible.

Ask away if you need any help, Frank.
