hi i'm undecided about sphinx or binisoft firewall i know they use the buit in firewall (w7-8 or w10 firewall) but i looking for a firewall that i can setup to paranoid when i want , and pop up as soon as a program try to connect to the net (outgoing connection) and via the pop up let me create a specific rule like the old outpost or the eset smart security firewall i would like to install on a new machine avira and a firewall and i have to choose one between them as i said ,i would like to see a pop up and the ability to create the rule and maybe use the wildcards for the ip thanks happy new year wilders !
i am working with sphinx firewall v7 pro (current is v8 ). i dont recommend any other crap below pro. and it is not that cheap as binisoft. if you use windows 8 or 10 you dont need avira or any other 3rd-party crap (maybe malwarebytes v2 or v3), windows defender is powerful enough. in special the free av builds are pain in some ass. if you decide for a paid version i still recommend eset AV (EAV) or eset suite (ESS). suite has firewall. then emsisoft. those two has no or close to zero negativ impact, work like charm and user friendly. if you want to add security try sandboxie and/or shadow defender if you want to try out "difficult" software - not for regular use, pointless. HTH happy new year
try SpyShelter Firewall. or net-peeker which is very good but not updated for many years or try this program "Wfp Tool" which is free https://github.com/henrypp/wfptool https://www.wilderssecurity.com/threads/wfp-tool-1-3-1-standalone-firewall.389491/ note that its may not work very well (conflict) with security soft that use wfp firewall driver example SpyShelterso you have use one of them but program are very good happy new year
Pure packet filtering firewall. No behavior, no HIPS. Not sure if MD5 or SHA hash is used. Sphinx has a totally paranoid default-deny policy. Anything new is immediately blocked, shown in a popup, and logged as "Detection". - You click on the popup entry, or on a line in the Event log tab, to edit a rule for the new application. There you can select one of many zones from the user-built favorites or the full list, click Apply and you're done. - Zones are handy groups of ports and protocols. Every zone policy is default deny, but every little rule can be changed and enabled as allowed. - And those zone groups of rules can be copied and changed to what you like. Probably the most common change will be limiting updaters to, for instance ports 53, 80, 443. Rules precedence within a zone is controlled by up and down arrows, from the bottom up - reversed from Outpost. - wildcards for IP - well, you can use CIDR notation - In the new version 8 many zones which have to do with the internet include a "telemetry" rule. And v8 added several examples of domain rules which are applied before application rules. Here you can add any domain name. - Programs list and events lists can be shown as just application names or with a full path. - Connections tab includes names of the applied zones. - Settings tab is used to make general settings including log locations and save/restore settings. - Windows firewall can be left running, but things sometimes get confusing. If either Windows firewall or Sphinx blocks, the effect is deny. But if Windows firewall allows, Sphinx may or may not allow. Best to shut Windows firewall off on all profiles. Some people shut off the Windows firewall service completely to avoid any confusion. One downside is that if you use store applications their frequent updates will not work. Finally, the windows base filtering engine has a bunch of hidden rules, and not all are known.
Id recommend Windows Firewall Control. Great support from the dev and so far I havent experienced any bugs in the software. For $10 you cant go wrong.
hi do you mean as soon as i an application start i get a pop up , and i can create a specific rule for this application? just because i have tried the free version and i haven't found the feature to create a specific rule , i get this pop up http://i.imgur.com/5ChVaJq.png i don't know how enter in a window to create a specif rule with port , ips and so on thanks
hi thanks i will try the firewall it's 19€ for year hi are you talking about binisoft ? thanks hi may i know what's wrong with binisoft, honestly i like more sphinx firewall , they have even a portable version don't know how good is it thanks
hi but there is not tutorial or video to create a specific or granular (in this forum this term is used) rule once i tried binisoft and it was easy create a granula rule but with WFC ....i don't what should i click to enter in the dialog window where i can create a rule thanks
WFC and binisoft are the same thing, only the paid version will show pop-ups. It's extremely easy to use and have all the features you are looking for
portable sphinx is useless - it runs with same rights than suer and is not protected. if you work with admin rights any security software is also useless and can be kicked off. optional in settings - you can chose another default zone. at least any firewall hast "disabled" (block) as default setting - i consider this as wise. but sphinx recognize system programs and set a default zone for it (eg "system" or "svchost"). but i noticed a negative behavior concerning firefox in the last v7 builds. dialog pop ups and while i chose "webbrowser" firefox get blocked and need a restart to get access - otherwise it wont display anything. this is caused by firefox. WFC = binisoft W7FC/W8FC/W10FC = sphinx (has a number in shorty) firewall from sphinx is more pleasing me and is similar to outpost or online armor (dead by emsisoft). HTH
Thats how firewalls are supposed to work. Default deny unless there is a specific rule allowing another behavior.
2 important things: 1. WFC (Binisoft) is a Windows Firewall controller. (use windows firewall for creating rules) 2. Sphinx is 3d part firewall. (his own firewall) So, your choice: If you want a Windows Firewall controller you can try WFC (Binisoft) or other choices like Tinywall, Glasswire which have the network monitor feature. If you want a 3d part firewall Sphinx will be my 1st choice.
