Can I set gmail so that the folder list on the left side is always open?

In other words, not having to select "More" every time. Thank you!

 

Go to Settings - Labels. Scroll down to labels, click on Show in label list and select Show all. You can also show circles and categories.

Thanks for this. Just discovered that if your list of labels is still cut-off, you can go to Settings > Chat > Turn off Chat.

If you need chat, you can go to settings - Labs and enable option Right-side Chat. This will put your chat list on right side of the screen.
In Labs section of settings there are other useful options also. Check it out
