Two or so posters, in this thread, stated that they use Avast and Malwarebytes Pro. Do you have to exclude the other in each? Or can you run them with no exclusion of each other?

From my knowledge you can run both together no issues.

Actually,EAM 6 is heavy in reality...it eats like upto 90 to 100 MB of RAM many a times even on idle. But not to mention, the test performed by VB100 is only on demand :cautious:

The very same applies for the rest AVs (ie: What when "X" Behaviour blocker, Web Guards, Web Protection, Web Filters etc, will detect some of those missed samples). :D

The good thing about MBAM Pro is protection against websites that EAM misses.

My concern about EAM is that it relies heavily on the Bitdefender engine. Their own engine has a poor detection rate and I wonder if they are even bothering to improve it.

Solid protection. I don't go on the Internet without it. Two AV engines plus excellent behavior blocker and website blacklist. Can use fair amount of RAM, but doesn't seem to slow me down.

If you keep an eye on zero-day sites like clean-mx and track the malware back to Virustotal, you will frequently see Bitdefender detecting malware while Emsisoft is not. This is due to a delay at Emsisoft in packing the updates.

An example would be ~ VirusTotal Results Removed per Policy ~.

This update delay seems to have gotten worse since they moved from Ikarus to Bitdefender. In fact, there was hardly any delay when they used Ikarus.

I would like to see people do zero-day tests on the 'new' EAM because I suspect they are much worse now.

Maybe that is because they only use the Emsisoft engine and not Emsisoft's product. So the Emsisoft that shows up is just their engine and not Bitdefender too. I don't know if this is actually how it is but just an idea.

Emsisoft synchronizes the signature updates from Bitdefender every 15 minutes. So you shouldn't experience much of a delay at all. If you have examples to reproduce, please let me know, we'll have a closer look at this.

Detection rate of Emsisoft's own scan engine standalone can't be measured at all because Emsisoft disables their own signatures for all files that are already detected by Bitdefender to avoid high memory consumption. Effective memory use is around 200 MB to keep the 200 MB of signatures in RAM. By using the memory optimization feature it usually can be reduced to 15-20 MB by using the pagefile.

By the way: Almost all vendors try to hide their memory consumption in some way. Some hide the signatures in kernel memory, which isn't displayed by the Task Manager, others just use the pagefile extensively. The point is: Millions of signatures need to be loaded somewhere and there is no way to avoid that completely without a loss in detection capabilities or performance.

Right now only about 3-4 million of the total 12 million active signatures in Emsisoft Anti-Malware are Emsisoft's own ones. About 8 million more have been disabled because of duplicate detection.

Actually this isn't caused by a delay in signatures. While there is a delay, it is less than 15 minutes. The version of the command line scanner VirusTotal uses on their servers doesn't work on some of their scan slaves. The VirusTotal team and we are already working on resolving this issue. In general, if malware is detected by BitDefender on VirusTotal, it is detected by us as well.

So you are basically judging a AV's capability to detect 0-day malware via virustotal results, right?

Well,You know what...VT only uses The scanning engines of AV's and not the whole AV package so who cares if EAM blocks the 0-day Malicious URL and doesnt detect the binary or if it allows the file to run and behaviour blocker catches up.

Dont forget, when someone detects 40% of virustotal's feed he is the master of the clan the malware you get on clean mx and some other sites must be somehow filtered otherwise no AV will be able detect even 10% of them if they are really 0-day in my opinion.

Same is true for all AVs though. You can expect the detection rate of all products to go up significantly if you perform a "whole product test". That is one of the reasons why VirusTotal discourages anyone from using VirusTotal results for any kind of comparison.

Keep in mind, as with other programs, you can tweak the file guard's settings to suit your system and reduce system impact.

Those who use Emsisoft's AM, which setting have you selected?

I've enabled 'scan only programs before they are executed'. Although system resources aren't an issue for me, I found it helped on laptops etc that are lower spec. And it then scans programs upon launch, similar to say 'webroot' etc.

Under 'surf protection', I've selected to 'block and notify' on malware hosts, as those are the most concerning, but 'phishing hosts' and 'privacy risks', I've selected to 'block silently'. This reduces the amount of pop-up alerts..

    Overall, very solid program.

    7.4 File Guard

The File Guard not only scans files before they are executed, but depending on the chosen settings, also before all other file actions such as moving or downloading from the Internet.

The following settings are available for customizing the behavior of the File Guard to suit your needs:

Scan only programs before they are executed - This setting configures executable files to be scanned immediately before they run. This setting has the least effect on the performance of your system while still providing sufficient protection.

Additionally scan all files when they are created or modified - This setting configures all files to be scanned when they are created or written to. For example, this occurs when a file is downloaded or copied onto your computer from a USB stick.

Additionally scan all files when they are read - This setting causes all files to be scanned before every read operation, so that simply selecting a file is sufficient to cause it to be scanned. This setting has the greatest effect on your system performance and should only be used on high end systems.

Only scan files with the following extensions: - When this check box is selected, the File Guard only scans files having the file extensions contained in the list below. On the one hand this setting can improve the speed of your system because only some files on the hard drive are scanned but on the other hand this also reduces the level of system protection.

    Wow nice replies Fabian.
Regarding EAM settings, i have it set to scan everything (On Access), all the behavior blocker rules and block/notify all websites.
I don't feel any lag at all, probably due to the upgrades i did to my PC recently.
