have you tried looking through the BIOS yet?

when u boot up the computer, u can access teh BIOS by pressing/holing the Delete or F2 key. the screen will usually tell you what button to press.

also ur Dell uses intel raid, right? during boot u can press ctrl + I and delete the raid from there.

it uses intel fake RAID. there are 4 options in the BIOS -

    RAID Autodetect/ AHCI
    RAID Autodetect/ ATA
    RAID On
    Combination

the default is RAID Autodetect/ AHCI, but i'm using Combination now. i asked a hardware expert and he doesn't think RAID can be turned off. so i suppose that's it - no Ubuntu on this computer.

thanks for the help, WSFuser. GF if you see this, your PMs are full lol. thanks for the links.

i do still want to try and disable RAID, but i'm not as desperate as i was, because i now i have SUSE installed, and configured. Ubuntu couldn't see the HDD ARRAY, i thought i only wanted Ubuntu as my primary OS, but i was wrong - SUSE will do fine.

i'll have another look for an answer over the next few days when i have SUSE sorted out. i really love SUSE now :ninja:

no, i don't miss anything right now, i really think i just love Linux :D

i think once you have spent the time learning the basics of Linux and how to setup a system without much trouble (configuration, installing software etc) you should be fine with new distros because you can use so many of the same apps. my desktop now looks just like my Ubuntu one.

anyway, i was going to leave it, but because of all the help i'm getting i don't think i can lol. i should find a fix though if i ever want to multi-boot.

    i've attached my hardware stats.

    here's the ubuntuforums thread.
