Must have been Nov. wu but Show Hidden Files was switched to unchecked. This has happened before because of wu. F M$.

@Krusty13 I just installed the latest updates for Windows 10, and of course my laptop is still working just fine, just as it always is after installing updates.

Merry Borkmas everyone, and goodwill to everyone except those responsible for excessive borkification (you know who you are). ;)

Oh well, the usual fortnightly quarantining I suppose ...

They don't buy them. They're made fresh at Microsoft...

I agree. They do need to fix the update situation though. Forcing updates on Windows 10 users and then releasing broken ones. This will turn into a class action at some point.

Where's my time machine? This almost never happens anymore. And if does the amount forfeited is less felt by the magacorps than I feel kicking a quarter under a immovable frig.

True, but if they stop forcing broken updates on us... I'm not looking for compensation, just the opportunity to resist bad updates. With Windows 10 we'll get them automatically until they recall them, then a manual cleanup is still likely. If there were an actual alternative, I would be using it.

With Windows update minitool you can handle the updates. The program has its own thread here on Wilders so search.

Jepp, it is designed for W10 but works on all MS OS. I use it and it works just as it should.

See to it that you inactivate W.update service also so you are shure no updates passes through and only have it activated when needed

I admit that 10 ran pretty well on my 6 year old Asus here, but I just didn't care for the updates that failed now and then without letting you know, and the spamming (Get Office and Get Skype advertising like crazy in 1511 build notification center), and I didn't like Win 10 messing with my photos and creating a half dozen random "albums" when I didn't ask it to do any of that. And that's not even mentioning all the disk thrashing that goes on in all versions of Windows on a regular hd like mine. Linux is a cool breath of fresh air compared to Win. Too much b.s. in 10 for me... but YMMV of course...

    Kerodo,

It's almost like we are using different OS.

I've had one update fail but it installed the next day. I've never seen Get Office or Get Skype. Maybe I deleted them, I can't recall. There is no spam. My Photos folder hasn't changed. No disk thrashing here on my HDs.

Prior to Win10 I had Windows Update turned off. I updated manually. That can't be done anymore so I just accept the updates will install without my control. It doesn't bother me.

I use Linux too. It runs fine on my hardware. But I'm not very accomplished so Win10 is my main OS.

Don't know how long it has been going on; just noticed it now. The Windows Update icon appeared inside the Shutdown button, instead of the Taskbar Notification area. Hovering over the shutdown button shows a Install Updates and Shut Down tool-tip. I searched and found this:

How to Disable “Install Windows Updates and Shut Down” Option in Windows Start Menu?

I used their Registry script Disable.reg file, and voila! it's gone! Just FYI.

    Hi Brian,

Yeah, there are things to like about 10, but evidently different people are having different experiences. When I clean install 1511, it almost immediately spams me with about 7 Get Skype notifications, then more the next day. Get Office spam is less, maybe one every day or so. I think it's the Photo app that's creating the silly "albums" and then notifiying me that it just created them for me. I don't believe an OS should take all these liberties. I want my OS to do what *I* tell it to do, and not have some hidden advertising agenda like 10 seems to have. Linux does none of this. I am able to use Linux 100% since I really don't need Win for anything like gaming or Photoshop etc. So it's easy for me to make the change.

The core of 10 (disregarding the ad related silliness) does seem to run well. Better than 7 or 8.1 in fact. So IMO it's a shame they garbage things up with the ads, but I guess that's what we get with a free OS nowadays. I probably could uninstall the Get Office and Get Skype apps, but should I really have to do that in an OS? Hmmm... :)

Anyway, yes, there are some folks on other forums who claim they have never seen any of the ads. Strange, but true... That's why the YMMV comment...

I just looked at a ver 1511 install in my test computer. I see Get Skype and Get Office in the All Apps menu. The icons aren't present in my main computer so I assume I right clicked the icons and chose Uninstall. But I've never been spammed in the test computer which has these icons.

That's what some others have said also, some get the spam and some don't seem to. Go figure, right? Beats me. The disk activity seems to be present in all versions of Win, actually 10 seems better than 7 now on that front. It's just something I notice here that you don't see in Linux at all. Linux boots up, gets to the desktop, and then it's silent, nothing... just waits for you to do something. I boot 7, or 8.1 or 10, and I can watch the disk light going for anywhere from 10 minutes to a half hour or more, doing what, I have no clue, but it does seem ridiculously excessive. I just think Win is doing WAY more processing than Linux ever does, and I wonder sometimes if it's necessary, and just what the heck it IS doing. I'm sure it shows up more cause I don't have an SSD. Still...

Ok, maybe that's it. I did notice the 2 apps in the start menu, Get Office and Get Skype. Maybe they generate these "suggestions". I did see the Get Office one in the 7/29 release of 10, however, the Skype one seems to have appeared in TH2/1551.

They need an option/setting in 10 called: "Don't bother me". :) I guess that's equivalent to turning suggestions OFF.

FWIW, they are among the first applications I removed after installing Win10.

Yeah, that's probably smart. I have no idea how to stop the Photo app from creating random "albums" that I don't want.... On the 2nd day after clean install of 1511, it started doing that and notifying me about it. It created about 4 "albums". That's just useless stuff as far as I'm concerned.
