Remote Approach has designed a way to track PDF files. Each time a person reads these special designed PDF files, a connection to http://www.remoteapproach.com/remoteapproach/logging.asp is made. This allows the company (and PDF author) to gather information such as IP addresses of those who are reading the PDF.

    Block the Connection

    1. Use your software firewall (such as Zone Alarm) to prevent connections to http://www.remoteapproach.com.
    2. Add this line to your host file (C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) to block this connection as well:

    remoteapproach.com 127.0.0.1

    Disable Adobe JavaScript -

If you don't use any of the new adobe javascript features, turn it off. No javascript... and it can't call home.

    1. Click Edit menu
    2. Select Preferences
    3. Select the JavaScript category
    4. Uncheck Enable Acrobat JavaScript
    5. Click OK

Or you could use the free Foxit PDF Reader. Just 1.75mb extracted to folder of your choice.

    Hi Spanner,

You can unload the plugins you don't need to greatly speed up loading. :D

From my notes (forgot the source):
    ---------
Adobe Reader 6.0 for Windows loads lots of unused plugins on startup. The Inquirer http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11041 has a great article explaining how you can disable those unneeded plugins and make Adobe Reader load faster. Basically, you need to do the following:

Navigate to The Acrobat 6.0 folder in Explorer,

locate the plug_ins subfolder and rename this folder to plug_ins_disabled.

    Create a new plug_ins folder.

    Move the files EWH32.api, printme.api and search.api from plug_ins_disabled to plug_ins.
    -------------

My Adobe loads in less than 3 seconds :D

    regards,

    ---

    Kaupp,
    Thanks for the information.
    You instructed ,
    "Block the Connection

    2. Add this line to your host file (C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) to block this connection as well:
    remoteapproach.com 127.0.0.1"

I don't know how to do that.
I have Look n Stop. When I went to the "application filtering" and clicked ADD a dropdown of my system, desktop etc, came up. Maybe someone who uses LnS can tell me how to add the line to my host file.
