In the long run, they wouldn't have had a choice in the matter. The first major FP disaster that came along without any option to restore whatsoever would have had hellfire and brimstone raining down upon them.

They are supposed to have some pretty elaborate preventative measures in place that would prevent the quarantining of a system file or that type of disaster, but who knows... it's pretty hard to create a system with no user interaction that is also 100% fool-proof. :)

The first initial update after install takes a little longer, but it should only be at most maybe a few minutes...

I'd almost call it impossible. I know lately there has been a lot of talking here about user decisions affecting test results, making security apps less secure and all that. However, any system that doesn't allow for user override is ripe for going haywire. There's the K.I.S.S principle and then there's being powerless. Or, rather, being so smart that it's inevitably stupid. There's a reason we haven't let machines/robots do absolutely everything yet, someone has to be able to step in when Murphy shows up unannounced.

I'm giving the latest BD Free another try here on a fresh image. So far, no issues, and all is well. If nothing negative shows up, I'll probably keep it. :)

No, but someone mentioned a reg hack that does it. I wouldn't mind knowing too. It seems better now than before, but I still notice a slight impact. Or maybe it's my imagination... too early to say yet. :)

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned it, maybe with a link, in previous posts, but I don't feel like browsing thru 79 pages to find it... lol.. :)

Mine isn't too much slower than usual so far.. I remember last time I tried it (about 2-3 months ago), it was slowing me down quite a bit though. I'm using Firefox. I just notice a slight slowdown, but I think I can live with it.

PS - The reg hack mentioned was never shared or linked to or documented in any way, I just searched the thread quickly, and got nothing useful.

I read a review article where the author characterized this AV's design as one of arrogance. I'm inclined to agree.

I have the reg hack to disable the web filter. The user that shared it with me via PM is no longer a Wilders member. I use to delete all my PM's after a couple of days, after downloading them (not because of paranoia but because the limit is too low :D)
I'll look for it in my other machine, and post it here.

    No problem mate! :)

    Here it is:
(Disclaimer: this was tested on the previous version, no guarantee it works on this one since I haven't tested it :D)

    Go to Registry - HKEY Local Machine - System - ControlSet001 - Services - bdfwfpf - Imagepath

Rename the .sys file to something like .sy_ and restart the system.

Now you can use Bitdefender without any slowdown due to the webshield.

Please share if it works and if it fixes the slowdown.

You are not supposed to run TL with BD Free installed, as it's redundant or they conflict. Try removing TL and then see if BD Free blocks the page.

    @atomomega:
I'll save it for future reference, but probably won't do it now. Browsing seems pretty good as is for me.
