BetterCloud bolsters G Suite security with rapid risk identification
Activity-Based Alerts for Google Cloud can help enterprises avoid unauthorized access to company data.

On Wednesday, SaaS operations management platform BetterCloud launched a real-time security monitoring and reporting solution for businesses using G Suite. The solution, called Activity-Based Alerts for Google Cloud, allows enterprises to continuously monitor cloud activity for malicious or unauthorized behavior, and automates security responses to prevent intrusions, according to a press release.

Activity-Based Alerts was created to help enterprises analyze user activity in G Suite, according to the release. IT can use the solution to set security policies and alerts to protect business data from unauthorized file downloads and suspicious user access.

Activity-Based Alerts is now available for Google Cloud, Okta, Dropbox, and other SaaS applications, the release noted.

Currently available in Beta, the alert center provides admins with a comprehensive view on essential notifications, and allows them to easily take actions to better serve and protect their organizations, Google says. The new feature was designed deliver insights to help admins better assess an organization’s exposure to security issues at the domain and user levels.

“In addition, G Suite Enterprise edition domains can use the G Suite security center for integrated remediation of issues surfaced by alerts,” the Internet company explains.

Additionally, Google is making it easier for users to set phones and tablets as company-owned devices. Starting on September 19, all users who add their G Suite account to a new Android device before adding their personal account will be asked to set up the device as their own or as company-owned.

“If you have advanced mobile device management but don’t register your company-owned devices in the Admin console, your users must choose to set up their devices as company-owned,” Google explained.

Google opens up G Suite security threat alert service to businesses

Google has made the alert center for the enterprise productivity platform G Suite widely available days after an exposure of data prompted the company to close down Google+.

On Wednesday, the Mountain View, Calif.-based tech giant said in a blog post that the alert center, previously only available in beta, "helps G Suite organizations detect threats and take action to mitigate them."

"For every alert, we include dedicated knowledge articles to help admins learn about the alert type," Google says. "Where relevant, we also have links that admins can use to take actions to help remediate the threat."
The alert center is now available for all G Suite editions and will be rolling out over the next 15 days.

We’re adding an option for admins to disable telephony options as 2-Step Verification methods for G Suite accounts in their domain. This option will prevent their users from using SMS and voice codes for 2-factor authentication.

As awareness of the potential vulnerabilities associated with SMS and voice codes has increased, some admins asked us for more control over the ability to use phone-based 2-Step Verification methods within organizations.

Google just made it easier to lock down your account if you're a G Suite user.
The internet giant is trotting out a series of updates for two-step verification, starting with the interface itself. You'll see new instructions text and images to walk you through the process of setting up a security key, and the flow for that process now changes depending on the browser you're using. You'll get an experience unique to Chrome or Safari, for instance.

You also won't have to rush to grab one of Google's own Titan keys if you want the luxury of Bluetooth. Google is promising "expanded" wireless key support, and you can enable the feature through a flag if you're on Linux. All told, you'll have a good excuse to adopt two-step if you were reluctant to adopt it in the first place.

Google LLC today strengthened G Suite with more security tools for Gmail.
In a blog post, G Suite product managers Andy Wen and Neil Kumaran noted that the adoption of new security tools is often tied to how easy they are to implement, and that the best way of doing this is to give IT administrators full control over the process.

Admins will soon have the option to implement a new security sandbox feature in Gmail that’s meant to help protect against zero day or yet-undiscovered threats, ransomware and malware that’s propagated by malicious embedded scripts. When the feature is switched on, email attachments are opened in a secure environment where they can be tested for the above threats.

“This allows us to proactively analyze behavior to detect previously unknown threats — and this analysis is done in a matter of minutes so that users don’t have to wait long for emails to come through,” Wen and Kumaran said.

Companies across the world using G Suite can now add execs and other high-risk users to Google's Advanced Protection Program, giving them the same level of security that Google has implemented across its 100,000 employees.

A central piece of the Advanced Protection program is it requires users to use a FIDO-compliant security key, such as Google's own Titan key or one from Yubico.
"I've never changed my password in my three years at Google. I've only been using security keys and I totally love it," he said. "I set [my password] on my first day at orientation and I've not changed it since. It's because we use security keys."

It also restricted which third-party apps could access Gmail data via the OAuth standard. Apple Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird, for example, are the only email clients that can access Gmail data once a user joins the program. Google also raised the bar for verifying a user's identity in an account-recovery situation.

Google expands its 'Advanced Protection Program' to protect public figures from malicious downloads

Experienced PC users will likely know how to spot risky downloads, but even they can be prone to mistakes from time to time.

That's why Google is rolling out a security expansion to its Advanced Protection Program (APP). The program, for the unaware, helps safeguard the data of public figures -- such as journalists, corporate executives, or politicians -- using two-factor authentication and other safety measures. Moving forward, the program will also offer malicious download protection to anyone who is in the program and has Chrome Sync enabled.

Moving forward, any Chrome users who have opted into the APP will receive a warning when they download a malicious file; whether the download was a direct result of user interaction (such as clicking on a fake download button) or not.
If Chrome decides that the file is particularly dangerous, it may even block the download outright.

When an app needs to sign in to your Google Account, there are two primary ways to do so — securely with an OAuth token or directly with your username and password. Apps that use the latter method are considered “less secure apps” by Google, and G Suite accounts will begin to lose access to them starting in June 2020.

Announced on the G Suite Updates Blog, Google is making a move toward further securing G Suite accounts by turning off a long-available method of signing in “less secure apps” to your Google Account. While most apps have moved forward with supporting Google’s secure OAuth flow for gaining access to your account, some legacy apps still rely on using a username and password to log in.
Some examples of this include older desktop versions of Microsoft Outlook, certain IMAP email clients, and calendar apps that sync through CalDAV.

Starting on June 15, 2020, G Suite accounts will no longer be able to sign in to a “less secure app” they haven’t used before. More critically, starting on February 15, 2021, all apps that sign in with just a username and password will cease functioning with G Suite accounts, with no admin policy available to reverse the change.
