Best CDP backup file versioning software

Curious what software users find best in file backup with continuous data protection (CDP...ie after file modification auto backup). I have found a few which look promising, yet would like some others views in regard to this subject. Thanks

Modification = you save the file or an automated process that happens every x seconds/minutes?

I am looking for software in which monitors certain user defined directories for file changes or modifications and automatically backs up the file to a different location. Coupled with versioning technology, this approach can safeguard data loss that is possible between image sessions and user mistakes.

Take a look at AJC Softwares active backup. It might fit the bill. I use it for what you are asking for. Link

I have been using NTI Shadow 3 for continuous file backup. Every time I create or modify a file, it creates a copy on another drive. It is continuous and instantaneous, not every X time interval.

    It works with no problems.
The NTI company is strange, becxause their user forum never gets any replies and their customer support is nonexistent. But the program seems to work perfectly under VISTA.

I see that now it is Version 4

Second Copy will allow files to be copied when they change.

Will any of these programs allow me to specify backup location so that -

    1. the backup does not depend on drive letter but the unique serial id of the external drive/usb
    2. when that drive is connected, backup is run automatically (and also version the changes if program supports it).

Basically looking for a set it and forget it solution.
