BEC Scammers’ Interest in the Real Estate Sector Rises

Cybercriminals choose their targets by the profit they can make off them and the real estate business seems ripe for the picking, security researchers warn after looking at some 600 attacks focused on this sector.
Tricks of all sorts
Researchers at Proofpoint say that both sophisticated and less capable scammers are currently in this game, some adding malware in their scheme while others rely on social engineering alone.
In one example analyzed by Proofpoint, the crooks added the name of the real estate company on a phishing page for Office 365 credentials. The link was sent to multiple brokers at that business, hoping that one of them would fall for it.

According to Proofpoint, anyone involved in real estate transactions is a target, from agents, buyers, and inspectors to insurance agents and contractors.
Simple things such as applying extra caution and checking the recipient's address when getting a suspicious request can lower the chances of a successful attack significantly.

“Shark Tank” TV star loses almost $400,000 in Business Email Compromise scam

Barbara Corcoran, one of the business moguls who head up the judging team on US TV’s “Shark Tank” investment show, has lost nearly $400,000 to an email scammer.
According to media reports, a scammer – posing as Corcoran’s executive assistant – forwarded Corcoran’s bookkeeper an invoice earlier last week, requesting that payment be made.

Unfortunately, the truth was that the email did not really originate from Corcoran’s executive assistant. Instead, the scammers had created an email address that looked the same as the executive assistant’s, apart from a difference in one single letter.
Speaking to People magazine, Barbara Corcoran appeared remarkably upbeat about the theft:

“I lost the $388,700 as a result of a fake email chain sent to my company. It was an invoice supposedly sent by my assistant to my bookkeeper approving the payment for a real estate renovation. There was no reason to be suspicious as I invest in a lot of real estate. I was upset at first, but then remembered it was only money.”

A phish doesn’t stand a chance against a shark.
It was a happy ending for Corcoran Group founder Barbara Corcoran when she got back all $388,700.11 that was stolen in a phishing scam.

“I’m thrilled!” the “Shark Tank” star told Page Six in a statement on Friday. “I had already accepted it and moved on. Everyone told me I wouldn’t get the money back and it just seems unbelievable!”
