Nine out of 10 banking professionals surveyed at large US, European and Canadian commercial banks said their company is currently exploring the use of blockchain technology for payments, according to a new report from Accenture. The initiatives are designed to reduce costs, speed payments, reduce errors and drive new revenues.

Blockchain adoption in banks coming, but slower than expected

You might think that blockchain has gone mainstream. Not so fast, says former UBS CIO Oliver Bussmann, who claims it may take banks two years to run blockchain in production due to regulatory hurdles, a lack of standards and other stumbling blocks. “This is real, this will come but in a very regulated environment. We will go through a lot of validation,” says Bussmann, who jumpstarted blockchain efforts when he was leading IT at the Swiss bank last year.

Blockchain can cut investment bank infrastructure costs by 30%

Benchmarking firm McLagan analysed information about the cost structures of eight global investment banks, and Accenture used a modelling tool to see where savings could be made.

It found that using blockchain, the distributed ledger technology that stores a permanent and tamper-proof record of transaction data, could reduce costs for these banks by 30%.

Enterprise Blockchain Attracting M&A As It Enters Commercialization

Financial institutions and venture capital investors are betting on the opportunities of updating the financial infrastructure with blockchain.

Enterprise blockchain-focused companies, who design a technology infrastructure and applications for other businesses to use blockchain, are drawing investment and have seen the first M&A deals.

According to a 2016 survey of 200 banks in 16 countries by IBM and The Economist, 15 percent said they expected to have blockchain in commercial production and at scale this year. The number increased to about 66 percent of respondents by 2020.
