Fortunately for most of us here, we are six steps ahead.

Yeah, but most home pc users [mum pops an the kids...lol]
Wouldn’t have any idea of the malware threats out today, let alone your garden variety viruses.

I believe that Microsoft and all operating system manufactures have a duty of care to educate the users of their software or at least provide adequate security.

Does u know how long an unprotected copy of WIN XP lasts after a fresh install?

    Two minutes!

[Test done by Australian PC Authority with original unpatched copy of MS WIN XP, with no security software installed]

If you bought a house or a car you expect to be able to lock the doors and that the alarm will actually work.

Actually, when one buys a car, they expect the driver to d r i v e!

The future may hold a car that can drive itself, but, not today. :)

I know exactly how you feel! No other company could get away with saying,

"Here, pay us at least $$$ plus $$$ dollars (or equivalent)to put this stuff we made up on your mega dollar plus machine and then $pay$ the phone, cable, sat-lite people to let you use your own $$$$ machine, now add program$ to it and pay those guy$ to let you put them on, then add a bunch $$$ more stuff, cuz other people want to know your bank account number, credit number, to live your life for free and this jus$ migh$ protect ya!

OH! and by the way!! Tough luck, if it doesn't work - crashes you computer, you lose your job, kid, house, money, retirement, computer, dog, cat, fish, hamster, gerbil - OR your mind!!!

We are not responsible for anything, but collecting your money.

Oh yeah! That is the way it is, how silly of me, (blush, quietly leave .........................>

Well, except at places like Wilders', where at least we are trying to learn enough to keep our hamsters! :) Probably not our minds, tho.! Sorry, too late!! :D

Not if you're driving my car... from MS.... Loaded with too many things I do not use but but lacks the things I need. Fortunately, there are a lot of accessory dealers around....

Ah the old "what if the OS is a car analogy".

A fairly famous one goes like this

    Windows is a station wagon
Mac OS is a sleek, Euro-styled sedan
    Linux is a tank
    BeOS a Batmobile.
