Backups on DVD

I have several backups of data on DVD...I had to reinstall my system. How can I use these backups so that I can continue to make differential backups of my data without starting all over with a fulll backup? All data is located on another disk which was not effected.

Please notice that if the initial full backup contains only the data partition/drive, then you can just continue differential backups (point to original full backup when prompted for backup name).
