I just wanted to know whether it is my connection or something changed with their update system: it's been a few days the update speed has increased so much that the update doesn't last more than 10 seconds! And that is both for the Personal and Premium version.

Do you mean update speed for the regular .vdf .dat .dll files or just the plain check of availability of files?

It would be nice if a developer could confirm/deny that improvement. Nevertheless I took a look at the update logs and didn't see nothing out of the ordinary.

The update tasks are performed smoothly and seamlessly as always here though.

    Premium version.

I just installed avira free and the update process is MUCH faster.
It used to take at least 20 seconds just to search for updates then it would download the updates at 150-200 KB/s, now it took less than a second to find the updates then averaged a 1100 KB/s download speed.

Exactly my experience. Normally Avira updates according to a schedule or one can trigger an update directly from the tray. In each situation the whole process happens very quickly in terms of search and download speed compared to what it used to be (I'm talking about staggering differences 30 kB/s and more than 1000 kB/s).

Normally, I don't employ an installed antivirus but this thread got me interested in trying it myself.

I downloaded from Avira's website. Following install, the update was much faster for me also.
    Very nice (so far).
I plan to keep Avira installed for a couple of days to see if the faster updating continues.

I don't know if the speed of updates for the free version has increased. Maybe they upgraded the servers to have more of them? Or perhaps they decided to give free users the full download speed...I wonder :)

That's the reason then, I didn't notice the improvement because my updates are done silently in the background (all update notifications enabled).

I've used Avira Free AV off and on over the years. The only reason why I left was because of the slow update servers. Sometimes the update would never happen for a few days. I installed this latest version about 2 weeks ago and the updates have been lightning fast. If this product updated like this from the beginning I would have never left. :D Let's hope it stays this way because it really is a good free AV.

I guess Avira is probably in the process of improving update servers worldwide and some areas will have to wait a bit longer. Not a real problem for you, reading your signature Avira is only a backup scanner.

I guess people running the free version will welcome this.

Does it apply to the latest version of Avira Personal too? :doubt:

Well, it seems as though we're back to "normal".

For me at least, updates for Avira Personal are back to the same tired routine.
Last Friday, scanning for updates was accomplished in less than 5-6 seconds- then the download would begin.
    The same for Saturday.
I didn't try updating yesterday (Sunday).

This morning, I am once again experiencing in excess of 1.5 minutes just to scan for updates.
This has occurred on several attempts spaced more than an hour apart. I didn't even bother to wait any longer for the updates after Avira taking that long to scan for them; I've been through this so many times before.

    Oh well.
I decided to install Avira after reading about the improved updating speed.
Now this; I'm tired of this crap. :thumbd: :thumbd: :thumbd:
    Goodbye Avira !!!

Everything is back to what it used to be: updates speed is just about what one would expect from Avira. I don't know why there's been this short period of high speed updates, and I'm sorry if my post might have created some false expectations with some members.

I'd like to add that my Avira personal updates in 40 seconds (total process) and the Premium version takes some 5 seconds longer (same room, same internet connection). These are reasonable speeds anyway.
