    this forum is biased!
i dont really want to make a big-ass post,

    so here goes:

kaspersky has better everything (apart from heuristics) :D

although kaspersky has some new heuristics in the latest beta that havnt really been tested, so who knows :)

Here is my brief experience of having both on my laptop at different times. Now, I am running Avira Suite but have run KIS 6.

KIS 6 does not run as light on my laptop as Avira does.

KIS Web browsing is very slow compared to Avira.

Avira scan is very fast compared to KIS but KIS scan may be more thorough in some ways.

Avira does not have as many options as KIS but is easier to configure and use.

    Both support forums are excellent.

KIS firewall is rated much higher than Avira in some tests.

KIS has proactive defense but Avira is working on something simlar.

Avira has fantastic heuristics and KIS is working on similar.

Some say KIS cleaning ability is better than Avira but detection rate I think is very close.

Avira's antispam is great but not integrated into major email clients like KIS antispam which is fairl effective.

I like them both but if I were to have to choose the product that performs best on my machine, I would choose Avira at this point.

I would have to lean towards KIS on this one... When installing AVIRA SS the firewall wouldn’t install correctly, so I really never got to try it out. I tried a few of the suggestions at their forum but, I still couldn't get it to install. I know they released a newer version of the SS but, I believe that my 15 day trial key has expired (and it took awhile to get). Apparently, from their forum there is an individual still having problems with the SS firewall. So for me it would be an issue of stability. Your experience may differ…

Definitely KIS is better IMO, and with the upcoming Emulator and the much more enhanced rootkit detection it will be unbeatable...:shifty:

I really don't nkow as I have not tried either. But i do not think kaspersky's new heursitics will be that good. Eugene Kaspersky has never been too fond of heuristics so I don't think Kaspersky wil gain godly heuristics or anything close to that. Or was that someone else?

    Hi,

KIS is better as security suite.

But if you are looking for only antivirus than NOD32 is the right product to go ahead.

I believe some type of behavioral blocking type of mechanism but I could be wrong and stand to be corrected.

Avira is working on behaviour heuristics (i.e. code emulation like NOD's Advanced Heuristics, Norman's Sandbox and BitDefender B-HAVE). It is not the same things as KAV's PDM.

KIS seems more polished to me, with a good mix of ease of use and advanced features.

KIS is definitely slower than Avira at web browsing due to Avira not having web scanning. Which shouldn't be too big of a problem, though it irks me that I can download malware without it being detected until I access it later on separately. (Not sure why Avira SS Beta wouldn't detect eicar after I downloaded it through firefox until I executed it.)

i second this post....i don't consider avira better than KIS in anyway.....considering that detections are not the only criteria!!

I am using KIS once more just to see. Yes, browsing is a little slower but I believe it is true - more polished and more features that provide better overall security at this point.

Thanks and I have set the Web AV to High and it helped a little but still a step slow compared to either NOD32 or Avira oc course.

Right now, just bouncing around between a few programs to see which dislikes I can tolerate the most and hopefully settle down on one soon. Thanks again.

Also, keep in mind that their is a newer version of KAV and KIS (currently in beta) on the horizon, which may have fixed the browsing issue that you experience. Perhaps, if you have some type of imaging software or FirstDefense you may want to try them out.

Yes, I just ran Scan My Computer with no threats found and maybe I will stay with KIS 6 a little while and see how it goes. Thanks.

Aviras suite, you want speed and security, or a ball-n-chain.

Having Installed KIS on My Dual Core Laptop  Running Vista Home Premium, I decided to Buy and Install The New Avira Security Suite for Vista ultimate on my Desktop, and I can say its a close thing between them, but for Speed and Performance, Avira SS Kicks Kasperskys Ass BIG TIME. Now.. whether they have the same Comparison on XP Machines I have No Idea, but on Vista Machines Avira SS is the Top Choice. Both work well on Vista, and on my Laptop http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/xps_m1210?c=au&cs=audhs1&l=en&s=dhs Vista runs like Lightning, and I have Aviras Firewall set to High, although I think this may be a little overkill, as the Medium Setting does an Excellent Job. The Anti Virus Component as we know is top notch also, with a vast array of customization Options, also available in KIS, but with more individuality than Kaspersky Offers. Coupled with its own AS for mine, Avira runs crisp and clean in conjunction with Spy Sweeper and Counterspy Actively on guard.

KIS much better than Avira SS. Avira neeeds to improve

    - FW
    - Stability issues( I read here on forums FW not installed, Ubrella shutdown, tray icon not loading etc and similar problems)
    - Updates issues
    - Lack of HIPS/ Behaves like PDMs
    - HTTP scanner
    - Poor malware cleaning( compared to KISS- my guess)

    Avira davantages:

-Very light( they might loose if they add more things like emulation, unpacking, HIPS/ Behaves. HTTP scanning etc
-Good heuristics( KAV might be on this track as well, let,s see).

After using KIS6 for a little while, agreed.
