I have a license for Avira for the computer I have at work. That computer runs on XP so I got the Avira AntiVir PersonalEdition Premium for XP license.

Now, there is a good chance that my workstation will have to be migrated to Vista in the next 6 months, will I be able to use the same license? I find it kind of peculiar that you have to choose the OS when you order the license.

Yes, you can use the same license.
It's only a problem if you have Vista and it's to make sure that you only install the X64 version if you have the 64 bit processor.
