Hi All, For those of you that use free AV's...which one do you have? I myself use Avira as you probably know already. Best Regards, Toby
You forgot to add Active Virus Shield based on Kaspersky, which makes it quiet popular. I use MWAV Free (no realtime), but I would choose in this order (detection, RAM usage): 1. Avira, 2. AVS (it got some bugs and it is from AOL), 3. Avast, 4. AVG Free (easy-to-use).
I just wanted point out, that I do not recommend, what I use, so it is the neutral opinion. However MWAV uses Kaspersky as well, so I have to admit, that my judgment is affected a bit.
No problem. Infact I was just asking about MWAV, I think I read about it at wilders but can,t recall now.
MWAV is a great tool, if KAV has 99% detection, then MWAV has 99,99% for sure. I use MWAV to scan downloaded files. It does not clean, but it finds almost everything. It does not instal, so it should not conflict with a realtime AV, thus it is nice ondemand AV. The new version gets out about once per week, so it can be used offline without updating.
When I used a free av, I used AVG, my roommate currently uses the new AVG 7.5 version and really likes it, so do I. So I voted AVG in this poll.
AntiVir PEC or avast! Home. Detection: AntiVir PEC Features: avast! Home My current favorite free AV is Active Virus Shield (Kaspersky engine) (without its toolbar!).
For friends who want a free AV I recommend they use Avast, avg in my opinion is not quite as user friendly.
Avira Antivir and AVG is light on my pc and don't consume much resources and has low ram consumptions, but the problem was that... they update very slow. For dial-up users this could be a big problem. So I have to go back on using Avast Home, the update is fast and automatic no problem to that and at least the detection rate is just good enough and maybe even better than AVG. Aside from that Avast has many features that others don't have...like the detection of my left out cd in my cd-rom. And to make it lighter, I just disable some of its protection feature...I only run 3 providers the standard shield, e-mail scanner and web shield. I felt protected by that set-up.
I voted Avira, but like AVG as well. I believe Avira is more functional. The way it is set up is better, cleaner, simpler and by all indications appear to have better protection and cleaning ability. I however have not done any tests. Maybe it is just me but the creators of Avira must think like I do which is why I find it easier to use. While I like AVG it requires me to pull up to many panels and when I am looking for bad stuff by doing a scan. I am not testing anything... I am just scanning my system for bad stuff. Avast I have never used. Therefore I can say nothing good or bad. It is good to see all three so widely used. The big three all deserve support for their free products.
