LOL. By the way, there's some confusion about whether the free version 9.0 is available yet. One report I read said middle of this month. The AVG web site is being hammered at the moment so I can't check.

Not yet available. I was able to browse the site but it says 8.5 free only and the downloaded showed only 8.5.420.

so this is bascially a PR release  i dont understand why they make such a major version change for such minor changes, this shuld only be like a x.7 release.

It's worth noting that AVG has released a new standalone (free) version of the link scanner. The file name is:

    avg_lsf_stb_en_8_37_free.exe

I don't know what the previous version number was and haven't tried this one yet. I liked the idea, but it slowed browsing quite a bit when I tried it last. Is anyone using this new version?

I am not sure if I am understand well what are you talking about but AVG 9 working great on my PC.

Very light and exceptionally good detection rate (on my little test get score of 100%, 23/23 more recent malware samples including the newest rogue antivirus)

If the free version of AVG would be as good as the paid version of AVG, IMHO, it will be the best free antivirus at this time.

Correct on both counts. According to this AVG Press Release: AVG Goes Back to Basics with AVG 9.0, under Availability and pricing, it states:

No, everything works fine here but I did not install link scanner and toolbar cause I do not like those features.

The prior versions was slow and could be taken over by rouge software where it couldn't be updated.
