I am currently using avast5.0 free, using the Network, Behavior, and File System shields only. My question is, "do I really need the "Network shield"" as I am hooked up to a cable modem which runs through a router and I also use a software firewall. I am in XP Pro SP3, use the firefox browser with adblock, wot, and noscript addons. Also using ClearCloud DNS.
I was thinking of uninstalling the network shield and installing the webshield. Any thoughts?

Network shield checks for common network attacks like worms etc, so with a NAT router and software firewall that isn't really necessary but the network shield also has the malicious URL blocker which can be quite handy. The webshield just scans pages, files and scripts from web pages, but if something gets on the PC it is still blocked by File Shield. On the other hand scanning scripts etc. might stop a drive-by attack and could save you if the malware was still unknown and not detected by heuristics etc. But so might the URL blocker save you. So in conclusion, they might both help prevent malware to get on your system which reduces the chance of infecting your system if the malware is not detected, and they both have things you don't need. I think I would chose Network shield because of the URL filter because you already have NoScript to prevent a lot. But on the other hand, WOT and ClearCloud also filter URL's. So maybe you should just try them out and see what's lighter on your system.

EDIT: Or if you use Limited User Account, UAC or a similar solution, just stick with the File and Behavior shield only.

Good advice for everybody , myself included, but rude responses read better with spell check enabled.:p New members don't seem to think about search and are initially just trying to find their way around.

Avast Internet Security paid version, at the cost you can get it for, is a steal. It is only going to get better and the 2 year license is well worth buying now.

yep. It really is the best bang product for the buck. I have decided to quit this merry-g-round of software I use, put it on and forget it.

You are almost better off just buying a new license vs. renewing at those prices...what a deal! :D

Actually after posting that I received a PM from someone at Avast with an offer to help, and I will likely take them up on it. If they are going to try that hard they may likely earn a customer. :thumb:
