Avast Question

does Avast have any proactive or preventative ability or is it simply a detect and remove type of AV?

Avast has good generic detection and "Network Shield" resident protection module which, according to Avast official web site, "can be viewed as a lightweight firewall (or more precisely, an Intrusion Detection System)" but has no other so-called proactive protection such as real/advanced HIPS, behavioral blocking etc... This ability, IMHO, probably will be very important aim in the future development of this exceptional antimalware software.
