I noticed today on Start64 that Alwil has released a new avast! version. Since I am a newbie of sorts with avast! how does the program update work? I tried forcing a program update but it tells me that none is available. If I download the setup file can I install over the existing version or do I have to do the uninstall/install bit?

Looks like someone beat me to the punch concerning this new version while I was preparing to submit my initial post. ~Threads merged. - Ron~

Mods - feel free to delete this thread. No sense having two going.

What's the old saying about "great minds" :D

No problem, mine was more of a question about the new version than an announcement anyway.

Maybe it just hasn't made it onto the update servers yet. I have always been able to use the update function in the past...should be the same this time I bet. I haven't tried to update yet myself. I like to see if any problems are reported with the new version and give them a chance to be fixed before updating. Usually it seems that avast! does a pretty good job of testing before releasing a new version though.

Well, maybe they can merge the threads with the change log at the top. Kill two birds with one stone so to speak.

I guess I can add that this version fully supports 64 bit instead of using WOW64 for it's kernel driver.

    Good news for us 64 bit-ers :)

Nothing has changed regarding x64 support in this version - it works the same as previously, there's no need to change it ;)
The page about x64 support has been there for a long time...

Avast will be installed in the 64Bit Program-folder of Vista64, but it works as 32-Bit application(s). No changes...

I noticed this morning I had avast! popups telling me to reboot my computers. I was running kind of late for work so I didn't have a chance to investigate the new version.

Going from what I read on that 64 bit info page, I thought it was supposed to be a "hybrid" x64. For example, in OneCare the main scanning program, MsMpEng.exe, ran in 64bit while it's support services ran in 32bit mode.
