Norton has vastly improved in their malware detection. Hmmmm, lady or man, lady or man, this is tough.

So I am to assume that Dr Web would have struggled to get a "standard" rating if v4.33 (which almost all of us are using) was tested?

    Hello IBK,

Actually, strictly speaking, you did not make an error, but rather used an antiquated term. The term 'worser' is included in the Oxford English Dictionary and Collins English Dictionary as "an archaic nonstandard word for worse".

    Best wishes,

    jm0307

PS: the OED even mentions 'worserer' as an extension of worser.

seems so, which i think is just....... [enter word here]

especially after 4.33 was just tested by avtest and seemed to do quite well.

very curious to read the report, i must say. o_O

Way to go AVG. :thumb: :thumb: I knew I made the right decision when I purchased AVG Internet Security. :)

Despite all the bashing NOD32 has received in these forums, it continues to do well with AV-Comparatives. I am still curious why NOD32 fares worse with AV-Test. Unfortunately, it would take NOD32 considerable time to analyze the results of AV-Test, time they don't have.

i hearded some complaints regarding av-test, because they didn't test
how good AV's were in preventing False Positives.
So, if that is the case, the AV that finds to most malware, but also had the most False Postives could be Number 1.

Of course False Positives are just as bad as missing malware,
they both can harm your system, especially if your AV is set to delete malware autom. and you are not using quarantaine.

For the record, i am not saying that AV-test didn't test FP's,
i don't know for sure, i like to know, it is just what i heared from some AV companies.

i didnt think av-comparatives took FP's into consideration during their on demand scans though.

this is a very puzzling result for the drweb after the av-test one.

I wonder if AV-test tweaks pgms up to their max settings. I believe I read somewhere that AV-comparatives does.

edit: Found in IBK's "methodology.pdf" document: "The programs will be set to use their best possible detection settings (eg scan all files, use deep/redundant scan, deep / high / advanced heurestics, etc.) and in special cases noted in accordance with the developers." PP 2, ITem #6.

Unfortunetly these likely thinghs are closer then the truth then one might think. Seen too many pc's crippled with malware and guard not working properly, ones names are mentioned in another thread, one starting with a and the other with n but i fear this will overcome more brands wich i pray against. Good thingh we nowadays we can choose other simple and effective security solutions. Layered is the best advice ive heard here.

Im a bit surprised to see AVG get Advanced+, it is the Anti-Malware version though. I wonder how the Pro version would fare?

I cant wait for the details.

Re: AV Comparatives is Almost Due

Yes, AV-test also tweaks programs to their maximum settings. Including redundant scan and the like. AV-test has always showed NOD32 in a slightly different light than AV-comparatives, and I really suspect this has a lot to do with the timing of the tests and/or the samples used for testing.

You shouldn't be, AV-test also shows a consistency in AVG's performance. Considering how AVG has improved their script, trojan and polymorphic detection with recent program versions, the already 96%+ detection rate might as well be bumped up to 97%+, which would award it an Advanced+ rating. ;)

As for AVG Pro, I think it would score at around 91-93% mark, which means "pretty much" an Advanced rating, or a standard rating. But in my personal experience, AVG Pro is by no means bad.

I think the difference is that AV-test's sample sets contain multiple variants of Bots and Zombies, while AV-comparatives' sample sets have more backdoors (my opinion, do not take this as fact). Maybe this is responsible for the strange differences we see. :)

the most Advanced+ are gained in this test, everyone is improving? or is it like school exams, they're getting easier?:D

Be interesting to see if the new Eset Antivirus would score same/worse(ererer)/better than NOD32...guess it will have to wait till it is final and a sneaky special test....please IBK!

Re: AV Comparatives is Almost Due

I thought that AV-Test sometimes uses out-of-the-box settings, but dunno. Time of testing is unprobably, as AV-Test latest test started 5 days after av-comparatives (5th August -> 10th August).
To keep the "school exams" difficult and to be able to differ better within the results, in the report is mentioned that _maybe_ in 2008 the levels will be set higher.

I think they're getting easier because, even if there is many new samples, most of the samples are from previous tests.
