In case DirecTV Now, HBO Max and Watch TV weren't enough, AT&T has one more streaming service in the works. The telecom used its second quarter earnings to reveal that it will start testing an AT&T TV service in "select markets" during the third quarter, with wider availability in the fall. The company didn't describe how it would work in a statement, but promised more details in the "coming weeks."

The telecom thinks it can simplify things a bit... well, maybe. As part of summer trials for its satellite TV substitute AT&T TV, it's rebadging DirecTV Now as AT&T TV Now and folding service into the same AT&T TV app.

The AT&T TV app will be available sometime in the "coming weeks," and existing customers will see the change take effect automatically through software updates. More details will be coming when the rollout starts in earnest, AT&T said.
However, the added simplicity doesn't necessarily translate to clarity. Two services in one app might be confusing depending on the execution.
One thing's for certain: this diminishes the power of the DirecTV brand.

AT&T’s live TV streaming service, DirecTV Now, is getting a new name. The company in July announced that the service would soon be rebranded to AT&T TV NOW at some point later in the summer. The company today confirmed that change is officially rolling out.

The company teased the rebrand’s launch on its Twitter account this afternoon, but didn’t clarify what it meant by “whole new look.” Many assumed the tweet referred to the fact that the DirecTV Now brand — which still remains across all app platforms and social accounts — will finally be removed.
A company spokesperson confirmed the tweet was related to AT&T’s prior announcement of the name change.

Heads up — this account is about to get a whole new look. Stay tuned for an exciting announcement.

AT&T expects to lose about 1.1 million TV customers in the third quarter as it faces pressure from an investment group that says AT&T's increased focus on the TV business was a giant mistake.

In an update to shareholders yesterday, AT&T CFO John Stephens "said the company expects an incremental 300,000 to 350,000 premium video losses above the previous quarter's premium video results," according to AT&T. Since that's an incremental increase over the previous quarter's loss, that will amount to a three-month loss of more than 1 million TV customers.

The projected loss apparently does not include AT&T TV Now (formerly known as DirecTV Now), an online service that AT&T hasn't included in the Premium TV category in its earnings reports. AT&T also lost 168,000 subscribers of DirecTV Now/AT&T TV Now in the second quarter, but it didn't say how that service will fare in the third quarter.

AT&T is facing a lawsuit alleging it created fake customer accounts to make it look like DirecTV Now was seeing customer growth ahead of the company's merger with Time Warner. The lawsuit, which seeks class action status, alleges AT&T "encouraged" its employees to add the service to customers' accounts without their knowledge, as reported earlier Monday by Bloomberg.

AT&T doesn't intend to sell DirecTV despite internal discussions about whether to offload the struggling satellite TV business, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.

"DirecTV is an important part of what we're going to be doing going forward," John Stankey, CEO of AT&T's WarnerMedia division, said in an interview with the Journal.
Millions of subscribers left DirecTV
Stankey spoke to the Journal days after the paper reported that AT&T was considering whether to "part ways" with DirecTV after buying the company in 2015. "The telecom giant has considered various options, including a spinoff of DirecTV into a separate public company and a combination of DirecTV's assets with Dish Network, its satellite-TV rival," last week's Journal report said, citing "people familiar with the matter."

Stankey apparently didn't deny the internal discussions but downplayed their significance. "We're constantly looking at the portfolio," Stankey said in the Journal's new story. "That's the normal course of business and it's not unique to DirecTV."

AT&T thinks its TV-customer losses have peaked, but that isn't saying much, as the company has lost 5 million subscribers since 2016 and more than 1.3 million in the most recent quarter alone.

"It's tough and we'll go through it for the rest of this year. But we're optimistic we've hit the peak of losses in the third quarter," AT&T CFO John Stephens said at a Wells Fargo conference for investors yesterday, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
In Q3, AT&T reported a net loss of 1,163,000 customers in the premium TV category, which includes DirecTV satellite and U-verse wireline TV services.

AT&T announced another round of DirecTV and U-verse TV price increases, saying that monthly rates will rise by up to $8 per month starting on January 19.

"Because our programming costs went up, we have to raise our monthly prices for select packages," AT&T said in a notice titled "TV price changes for 2020."
An additional $2 increase on the Regional Sports Network fee means that some customers will pay another $10 per month.

The $8-per-month increase will apply to the DirecTV Premier plan that currently costs $189. A $7 increase will apply to the Ultimate package that costs $135 and to the Xtra package that costs $124; a $5 increase will apply to the Choice plan that costs $110; a $4 increase will apply to the Select package that costs $81 a month and to the Entertainment package that costs $93; and increases of $1 or $3 will apply to basic plans.

If you can't make money in volume charge everyone more... They have started robocalling me to try to get me to come back. If they don't stop I'm going to switch phone carriers as well. DirecTV is the only TV service I have used that will never get my business again.

AT&T lost another 1.16 million subscribers from DirecTV and its other TV services in the final three months of 2019.

AT&T today reported a 945,000-customer net loss in its "premium TV" category, which includes DirecTV satellite, U-verse wireline TV services, and the "AT&T TV" online service that launched in Q3 and is only available in about 15 cities.
AT&T also reported a net loss of 219,000 customers from AT&T TV Now, a separate streaming service formerly known as DirecTV Now.

For the entire 12 months of 2019, AT&T lost more than 4 million customers from its satellite, wireline, and linear streaming-TV services combined. The company began 2019 with 24.49 million TV customers and finished the year with 20.4 million.

AT&T TV is launching nationwide today after initially rolling out to over a dozen markets last year. The subscription TV service — not to be confused with AT&T TV Now (formerly DirecTV Now) — is contract-based, which is a departure from the freedom you get with month-to-month streaming TV apps like YouTube TV, Hulu with Live TV, and Sling TV.
This is basically AT&T’s next play as it moves on from DirecTV, which continues to bleed subscribers each quarter as more consumers cut the cord.

On its own, AT&T TV starts at $49.99 per month. Here’s the company’s channel lineup so you can see what’s offered in each package. The base “entertainment” package includes local broadcast channels, ESPN, AMC, HGTV, FX, USA, and a decent selection of other cable networks.
Those prices would be fine (or at least competitive) if they stayed that way. But... they don’t.

AT&T TV pricing goes up dramatically after 12 months of service. Entertainment goes from $49.99 to $93; Choice goes to $110; Xtra to $124; and Ultimate to $135.

In an earnings report published today, AT&T revealed that it lost roughly 900,000 TV subscribers in the first quarter of 2020.
While that number may seem like a drop in the bucket compared to AT&T's overall number of TV subscribers -- which sits at 18.6 million -- it's still a significant loss, and it's the sign of an ongoing trend that doesn't appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

No matter how you look at it, that's bad news for AT&T. However, the company does have a bit of an excuse for losing nearly a million subscribers in this particular quarter -- Covid-19.
The virus has prompted millions upon millions of people to stay home and avoid going to the office (if they have one), which has, in turn, pushed them toward convenient, affordable, and contract-free video services like Netflix.

AT&T is trying to revive its video fortunes with HBO Max, a result of its acquisition of Time Warner Inc.
HBO Max launched in May and has 4 million customers, including “roughly three million retail customers, and an additional million activations that came through AT&T platforms (i.e., bundled plans,” The Verge wrote today.

At $15 a month, HBO Max provides just a fraction of the per-customer revenue that AT&T gets from satellite and cable-like services.

That's the problem. DirecTV was cheap until AT&T got it. Then they wanted $100 a month for it. It's not a service that is worth that price. Now they're going to be down about $95,000,000 per month because they got greedy. I would have kept it for $30 per month, maybe for $40 per month. Not for $100.

That's indeed way too high. I think 60 euro (70 bucks) for an "all in one" package (tv, internet and phone) is a good price. This is without any streaming service like Netflix and Prime Video of course.

Private equity firms are in discussion to acquire the satellite TV arm of AT&T in a deal worth under $20 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed sources. The news comes after AT&T was reportedly first looking to ditch DirecTV or merge it with Dish last year.

In total, AT&T lost 4 million pay TV subscribers in 2019, ending the year with 20.4 million subscribers in the US.
