Ashampoo has released Burning Studio 12. It weighs in at 171 megs. I wonder if somewhere in all that code they added support for CD Text? :) Perhaps someone knows and can save me installing the trial...?

171 MB? What is this? The "Nero syndrome" hitting the burning programs one by one?

When the current version i have fails me, i will have to search for lighter alternatives.

I agree the size seems excessive. I'm guessing that most of it goes to clip art for CD labels and jackets. Ashampoo is always pushing the "new version" and they have to find something to differentiate it from the previous version. They list some new features, such as volume leveling for audio CDs, but the previous versions I've used going back to 2010 have all been sufficient for me apart from the lack of CD Text support. I'm hoping they've finally added it. I'll probably install the trial in a VM if someone doesn't chime in here.

When you ask about "cd text" do you mean the info I put down for a song on a cd I'm burning so that when it is played in my car stereo the info will scroll across the screen? (like the name of the song and artist and whatever else info I want?)

Yes, exactly. The only reason I burn audio CDs is to play them in my car stereo which has a display screen. By the way I installed Burning Studio 12 in a VM and confirmed that CD TEXT has not been added. That's unfortunate as I was hoping to not have to keep using multiple burning apps.

Running version 11 here. The installer I have is 175 mb for v.11.0.4 so the size has actually been reduced I think.

Handles CD TEXT the best, just not very user friendly.

free wise it does great with cd text but not even close to ez cd da extractor (now called ez cd audio converter) for music and cd burning that is hands down the best program imo out there today and has been for a LONG time.

It's been a while since I burned anything with Media Monkey. But I won the gold version off a web site contest a couple years back and decided to make some cd's. I remember everything came out perfectly...and I believe the cd txt was there too, but can't remember exactly.

I looked at the screenshots for Media Monkey at Softpedia.com and it shows options for both CD Text and volume leveling, so I'll give it a try. Regarding volume leveling the default is 89db - any idea why that's the magic number? I"m familiar with the concept but not with the implementation.

Update = answered my own question here:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Replay_Gain

This is a complex subject. The notion of calibrated monitors seems mostly irrelevant (I don't play my music in a movie theater), but volume leveling is useful and it's not clear to me if 89db is optimal for (for instance) playing CDs in my car. It seems to me that the strongest signal short of clipping provides the best SNR...?

Thanks - be aware that Ashampoo Burning Studio 2012 is always free. For instance here:

    http://download.cnet.com/Ashampoo-Burning-Studio-2012/3000-2646_4-75290219.html

The $50 price shown on the computeractive site is a mistake and applies to the full version 12. ABS2012 is a cut down version of the full v12 package. Still it's very capable and I was using it until I bought the full v11 on sale. Unfortunately none of the Ashampoo Burning Studio apps have CD Text support. It is a strange oversight in what is otherwise very feature rich software.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that, it's easy to assume that v12 and 2012 are the same thing

Ashampoo Burning Studio 2013 is out too and is free. I believe it is version 11 but may have some components missing, not sure.

Interesting. I'm downloading it at the moment and will post back after I've had a chance to check it out. Hopefully there are new features. They're claiming this is a "full" version, but the installer EXE is 87 megs - much smaller than the paid versions 11 & 12.

The feature set of Ashampoo 2013 is exactly the same as the v2012 as far as I can tell. The version number displayed in the "About" box is 11.0.5 (the paid v11 is 11.0.4). As to the claim that this is a "full" version I don't know what they're implying. It's as "full" as v2012, but they still have v12, which I guess is a "more full" version, that they encourage people to upgrade to :)

It's not a mistake, it's false advertising. They know the price is always free, just like the same listings on downloadcrew.com. They list them as payware products with a suggested retail of $49, or whatever, even though they are always free. It just an aggressive form of advertising to get people to download the product, thinking they are getting a great deal. Then Ashampoo starts the daily spam, pop-ups, etc in a continuation of the aggressive advertising.

Yes, when I said it was a mistake I didn't mean it was unintentional :) When it comes to advertizing "agressive" is certainly an accurate description of Ashampoo. Still, some of the software is quite good and with a little care the spamming can be (almost) eliminated.
